Position Summary:

The Academic Advisor will advise General Population students in all aspects of matriculation from application through to certificate or degree completion. This includes assisting with student application, course selection, enrollment, and procedures for transfer institutions. This position will participate and organize follow-up activities as directed by the Manager to support student populations at PSC. They will also assist in maintaining a recordkeeping system that facilitates program planning, development, and evaluation.

Reporting Relationship:

This position reports to the Manager, Academic Advising.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Work directly with the Manager to ensure that the goals and objectives of advising are met.

2. Provide academic advising and counseling information services to student participants through structured individual and group meetings.

3. Monitor students' academic progress; maintain detailed records of all aspects of students' progress including academic, professional, personal, etc., that would aid, or impede their overall success.

4. Conduct appropriate referrals for students as necessary.

5. Assist with all aspects of program review and student retention efforts such as surveys, focus groups, orientation sessions, workshops and intervention groups.

6. Build and maintain positive working relationships with PSC faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians to assist program participants with academic advising, counseling, consultation, referral, and information services.

7. Performs other duties as assigned for the betterment of each program participant consistent with the role and required functions of this position

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree is required.

2. Demonstrated sensitivity and experience with students from low-income, disadvantaged educational backgrounds.

3. Demonstrated ability to assist students in a culturally diverse environment.

4. A minimum of one year of experience advising or counseling in a college setting.

5. FAFSA knowledge and experience in financial aid.

6. Working knowledge, along with comfort level, in assisting students with college and university admissions, transfer policies, and financial assistance processes.

7. Proven commitment to college student population.

8. Ability to work in teams.

9. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience working with college students.

2. Experience working in a community college.

3. Working knowledge of Federal Financial Aid.

4. Outstanding programming skills designed at enhancing the quality of the academic and personal lives of low-income, first-generation and disabled students.

5. Experience with Datatel Colleague.

Anticipated Work Hours and Days:

Maximum of 19 hours per week. Monday thru Friday, 8am to 1:00 pm. Maybe asked to work evenings during peak registration

Salary:

minimum starting hourly- $20
