Assistant/Associate Director for Student Life - University Laboratory High School

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Director for Student Life at University Laboratory High School. This position supports the Director in all aspects of the operation of the school, with special emphasis on student issues, and acts as a liaison to mediate between student and faculty concerns. The successful candidate would begin in August 2024 after the successful completion of a criminal background check.

University Laboratory High School is a 5-year public school for approximately 325 select students. A laboratory mission of innovative curriculum development, outreach to other schools and the community, and/or involvement with professional organizations is part of the overall job responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student contact
• Serves as administrative liaison with senior class.
• Performs daily supervision and discipline of students, including managing attendance and tardiness, and oversees improvements to attendance systems (Associate level only).
• Oversees and communicates with staff on issues of student supervision.
• Handles student discipline issues, and oversees improvements to disciplinary systems (Associate level only).
• Implements disciplinary and academic probation plans.
• Works with Student Council and SFAC.
• Approves and shares in supervision of student activities and school events.
• Addresses instances of plagiarism and other academic misconduct, and leads the staff in advancing a school culture of academic integrity (Associate level only).
• In general, acts as a liaison to mediate between student and faculty concerns.
• Shares in supervision and disposition of ill or injured students.
• Supervises traffic and hallways, including the 45 minutes before school starts and end of day (until the building closes to students without direct supervision).
• Works with assigned staff to assure effective functioning of Agora Days.
• Works with assigned staff to assure effective functioning of Uni Period.
• Works with Summer Camp coordinator and other staff to assure effective functioning of Summer Camp programs.
• Assists with senior end-of-year activities as necessary.

Administration, admin communication
• Oversees Clery Act reporting.
• Administers and oversees the school's co-curricular program and other student activities.
• Oversees SSO and assures compliance with appropriate regulations.
• Works with the SSO and oversees the development and implementation of student individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans.
• Oversees concurrent enrollment.
• Supervises study hall teachers/supervisors.
• Manages all display areas.
• Provides information to students, parents, and staff through emails and website updates.
• Approves documented absence requests.
• Opens and closes the building for special events, with the help of other administrators and faculty.
• Confirms chaperones for special events such as dances and plays.
• Sits on the Multicultural Parent Advisory Group (MPAG) Committee.
• With the director and SFAC, seeks feedback of the Student-Parent handbook before summer revisions.
• Promotes workplace expectations.
• With other personnel, coordinates graduation ceremonies.
• Enforces school policies related to bullying, sexual harassment, harassment, and discrimination.
• Represents the school to the University and community.
• Supervises student activities, i.e. dances, talent shows, etc.
• Serves as liaison to and collaborates with the Regional Office of Education (ROE).
• Assists the Director in overseeing curriculum, instruction, and teacher evaluation.
• Chairs Executive Committee.
• Publishes Grade Reporting Schedule; supervises student grade reporting.
• Supervises production of Faculty Handbook with Executive Committee and Director.
• Assures SSO and office implementation of procedures related to the maintenance and security of student records.
• With other university personnel, develops and communicates the Emergency Response Plan; plans safety drills.
• Assists the Director with compliance issues related to University, state, and federal policies.
• With the Director and the Coordinator of Lab Mission and Professional Development, develops and oversees professional development.

Scheduling and class logistics.
• Oversees the master scheduling process, facilitated by the Master Scheduler (with input from the Director, as needed).
• Oversees student scheduling, facilitated by the Student Services Office.
• Addresses student issues related to schedules.

Position Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field of study.

• Minimum of five years of teaching experience.

• State of Illinois administrative certification (in-progress or planned)

• Master's degree in an appropriate field of study. ( Associate level)

• Three years or more experience in an administrative role, ( Associate level)

Preferred

• Master's degree.

• Two years or more in an administrative role.

• Current State of Illinois administrative certification.

• Ph.D or Ed.D (Associate level)

• Four years or more in an administrative role. (Associate level)

Successful candidates will have the following-

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Minimum salary for this position is $79,000. We strive to provide a competitive salary, considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough assessment of these elements.
