The Animal Activist Legal Defense Project seeks to advance innovative organizational, legal, and communications strategies designed to (1) amplify the impact of those who bear witness to the suffering of non-human animals; (2) provide animal activists with high-caliber legal representation in rapidly evolving areas of law; and (3) foster a more inclusive animal protection movement.
Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of the Animal Law Program, and working closely with other members of the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project, the Assistant Director for Community Initiatives will advance community engagement, collaborate with individual and organizational stakeholders and partners, and work to develop innovative and effective initiatives to advance inclusion and justice in the animal protection movement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Director of the Animal Law Program and with members of the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project to promote the distinctive qualities of the Project to external stakeholders, including individuals, non-profit organizations, community groups, foundations, institution, and other potential collaborators and partners and to work effectively with them.
  • Partner on initiatives designed to advance inclusion and justice within and across the animal protection movement.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Animal Law Program, the Program Manager, and other colleagues to plan - and participate in - relevant on- and off-campus events.
  • Undertake other Project-related duties, as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year university or college
  • Outstanding written and oral communications skills
  • Experience in leading programmatic initiatives in the realms of inclusion and/or justice
Preferred Qualifications
  • A JD or equivalent legal degree
  • Experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse communities in advancing legal, civic, and/or policy initiatives

Work Schedule

Normal hours are typically Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. Occasional travel is contemplated. Some evening and occasional weekend hours will be required.

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is 9.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
