GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures will coordinate and administer and lead all aspects of Outdoor Adventures. The position is responsible for all aspects of planning, marketing, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all Outdoor Adventure programs, services, and equipment. This position also assists the Director of Recreational Sports Programs by performing tasks associated with assigned special projects.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the administration, planning, and evaluation of all outdoor adventures programs and services.
  • Teach and lead various day and overnight outdoor adventure trips (including but not limited to; paddleboarding, camping, hiking and surfing) throughout the year.
  • Supervise the Coordinator for Outdoor Adventures, who directly manages staffing and operations for the Outdoor Adventure facility.
  • Recruit, hire, train and evaluate student Outdoor Adventures trip leaders and student staff. Develop and implement a comprehensive student development program to foster leadership and transferable life skills.
  • Review and develop the annual trip leader training curriculum. Facilitate training for skills that include, but are not limited to basic camp craft skills, rock climbing, paddleboarding, surfing, kayaking, backpacking, group development, risk management, wilderness medicine, and Leave No Trace outdoor ethics training.
  • Supervise activity in Outdoor Adventures; ensures the proper procurement, keeping, maintenance, and systematic rental of outdoor equipment.
  • Advocate and promote various South Florida outdoor activities in programs and services.
  • Lead First Year Trip program in the summer in collaboration with the Office of Orientation.
  • Complete regular and detailed assessments of all programs, services and activities.
  • Track weekly, monthly, and annual revenues and expenditures related to the Outdoor Adventures program. Maintain fiscal summaries and cost analyses of each activity. Assist in the annual budget preparation for all Outdoor Adventure programs.
  • Develop and implement marketing of Outdoor Adventures offerings including, but not limited to social media.
  • Oversee the Outdoor Adventure's risk management policies and procedures; lead staff and colleagues in identifying and addressing areas of risk and exposure; implements best practice; advises the Director on areas of concern and recommends policy change.
  • Manage, maintain, operate and coordinate staff training for the van and trailer.
  • Develop leadership and experiential learning opportunities within Outdoor Adventures.
  • Assist with miscellaneous special projects as assigned by the Director of Recreational Sports Programs or Executive Director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation Administration, higher education/student affairs administration, management, or related field.
  • Masters preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Certification as a Wilderness First Responder or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated pursuit of personal professional development through national organizations (AORE, NIRSA, etc.)
  • Ability to meet the requirements to drive University and personal vehicles.
  • Exceptional knowledge of skills, techniques, and certifications involved in programming a variety of outdoor adventure activities.
  • Basic understanding and ability to execute Outdoor Adventures programming on a college campus.
  • Demonstrated experience administering risk management and best practices in outdoor adventure programs.
  • Basic understanding and ability to provide leadership for an Outdoor Adventures Program.
  • Demonstrated experience training staff in preparation to lead outdoor adventure trips.
  • Experience with developing and implementing goals, learning outcomes, and assessment programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across campus.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation, proposal, and monitoring of revenues and expenditures.
  • Ability to recruit and retain student personnel and ability to monitor certification of staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with evaluation and assessment including applications, data collection, and reporting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; Proficiency in computing skills and assessment.
  • Evening and weekend work required.
