501214 - will is a dynamic, living program that agilely responds to cultural shifts, academic developments, and changing student needs and demands. The Assistant Director of the will Program reports to the Director of the will Program/Associate Dean for Outreach Education and Development, holds faculty status in the School of Arts and Sciences, and teaches in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (WGSS).
The position involves the execution of high-impact practices that integrate WGSS analysis, praxis, and community building into the curricular and co-curricular requirements of will program participants. The position works to implement an academic mission through which students develop leadership skills and learn WGSS theories and practices through a supportive community that centers intersectional feminism. In addition to teaching and advising, the Assistant Director works with the Director of will to: mentor and advise student leaders, administer the program, share expertise with Westhampton College through membership on key committees, and serve the campus as an expert on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially those related to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and intersectional social justice work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership, Administration, and Community Building:

  • Contributes to the strategic thinking and planning processes related to the will
  • Provides intersectional leadership both in and out of the classroom.
  • Works closely with the will student leadership team, which includes:
    • Planning and implementing an annual inclusive leadership workshop.
    • Mentoring student leaders, including regularly meeting with them individually and in groups.
    • Serving in an advisory role at will leadership team meetings.
    • Supporting the team's implementation of programming and activism projects.
  • Actively develops campus and Richmond community connections related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Provides regular program-related communication and outreach for the website and social media, including communication with program alums.
  • Stays informed of developments in intersectional social justice related fields (including WGSS, critical race studies, and queer studies) through conference attendance, inquiry, and research.
  • Other duties as assigned.
will Curricular and Co-Curricular Responsibilities:

Curricular
  • Teaches or co-teaches two will-specific WGSS courses each year, which may include WGSS 201: will Colloquium, WGSS 280: Gender and Work, WGSS 301: Senior Seminar.
  • Directs the will Internship program. Teaches and oversees WGSS 388: Internships. Supervises internships, a high impact practice required of all will students, which take place year-round. This work requires communication with interns over the summer.
  • Additional opportunities to utilize WGSS expertise to create and teach a course of one's own design.
  • Additional opportunities to teach outside of the program to enhance connections with faculty, promote will, and develop further WGSS expertise.
Co-Curricular
  • Holds regular individual meetings and office hours with and for all will students related to academic and personal matters.
  • Provides learning and community building opportunities for will students outside of the classroom throughout the year.
  • Supports student initiatives that connect WGSS learning to praxis.
  • Serves as the lead for two will+WGSS speaker series events each year.
  • Organizes annual student presentations at the National Women's Studies Association Conference, which includes developing students' presentation skills and their ability to succinctly disseminate their research.
  • Cultivates and maintains connections with WGSS colleagues nationally and globally, including those who have replicated or are interested in replicating the will
  • Other duties as assigned.
Westhampton College and University-Wide Service:
  • Serves on various committees/boards relevant to the role as assistant director of will, a WGSS faculty member, and a student development staff member. This includes contributing to college and university DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) initiatives.
  • Contributes to the strategic thinking and planning processes related to Westhampton College, including community events, programming, celebrations, and overall campus culture. This work also involves committee and/or board work as well as contributing to the planning and implementation of Westhampton College's annual Connecting Womxn of Color conference.
  • Serves as an important link to faculty in Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies, which includes serving on the WGSS advisory board.
  • Represents and promotes the will program and Westhampton College to various constituencies of the University, the larger Richmond community, and beyond with a focus on intersectional feminism and social justice issues.
  • Serves as a campus expert and resource on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging issues, especially those related to gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and intersectional social justice work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intersectional social justice related fields (WGSS, critical race studies, queer studies) and the ability to put this knowledge into practice, in both curricular and co-curricular spaces, when working with students, faculty, staff, alums, and community members.
  • Record of demonstrated effectiveness in the college classroom.
  • Demonstrated passion for mentoring and advising students beyond the classroom to support students as they work to create inclusive communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and advocate for students from diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences, both in curricular and co-curricular settings.
  • Demonstrated success in institutional DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) work.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a supportive team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple projects and tasks in a student-centered, fast-paced, convivial office environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • PhD in WGSS (Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) or a related field strongly preferred, M.A. required.
  • Three years of administrative and leadership experience preferred.
  • Leadership and/or activism in academic and/or community-based intersectional social justice organizing
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt 10-month position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
  • Some evening work required; occasional (rare) weekend work required
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $52,829.00 to $69,999.00 annually); prorated, based on 10 months
