The Department of Art History and the Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for the full-time, benefits-eligible position of Assistant Instructional Professor for a two-year renewable term starting on September 1, 2023.

Responsibilities include teaching 4 courses in architectural studies per academic year, along with administrative duties and professional development. Specific courses to be taught will be determined by the Architectural Studies faculty advisor and the department chair.

Administrative duties include curriculum planning for design studio classes, including orienting and supporting design studio instructors and helping coordinate studio space; coordination between Art History department chair and staff to perform any necessary administrative duties related to the design studio classes; keeping track of students' progress through the Architectural Studies minor, for the purpose of program development; generally assisting the faculty advisor of the minor as needed; working with departmental staff to procure analog supplies and digital tools necessary for studio courses; coordinating with Chicago Studies and other campus units in experiential learning; attending design reviews or other class sessions of studio classes, as requested by instructors; overseeing co-curricular event programming and promotion, including weekly Open Studio events; collaborating, for the purposes of program and community development, with other entities on campus and with similar programs at peer institutions that study the built environment; collaborating with the Career Advancement office to support internships and other work opportunities for students; mentoring and advising students, including portfolio reviews; BA or MAPH thesis advising; maintaining communication with a network of studio alumni/ae for student engagement.

Required are a Master's Degree or equivalent in Architecture, Urban Design, or a related field and experience teaching design studio classes within a university or liberal arts curriculum. Familiarity with Chicago and its architectural assets and milieu as teaching resources is highly desirable.
