The University of Miami School of Law has a great opportunity for an Assistant Dean for Belonging and Inclusion to work at in Miami, Florida.

Position Description

SUMMARY:

The University of Miami School of Law seeks an experienced leader to serve as the Assistant Dean for Belonging and Inclusion. Reporting to the Vice Dean of the School of Law and serving as a member of the Dean's senior leadership team, the Assistant Dean will provide academic, social and cultural support for students from groups historically underrepresented in legal education and the legal profession as well as creating programs for all students, faculty and staff that highlight topics of DEIB. The Assistant Dean will also serve as the Law School's representative in relevant University and community activities and groups.

Reports to: Vice Dean, School of Law

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic leadership

  • Working as member of the Dean's senior leadership team, design, implement and assess school-wide programs, initiatives, and approaches to reinforce DEIB as core values throughout all aspects of the law school community.
  • Advise on institutional responses to issues related to DEIB, coordinating with other DEIB leaders on campus and including acting as a spokesperson and strategic leader both internally and externally for the School of Law.
  • Develop, update and report on data and other monitoring tools to track the School of Law's progress in its DEIB efforts.
  • Collaborate with the School of Law communications team to increase awareness of DEIB policies, practices, and programs.
  • Develop partnerships with other DEIB leaders at the University and within the broader community to align, coordinate, and support efforts for impact.
  • Bring and share an equity-minded lens to policies, practices, and assessment at the School of Law.

Programming and instructional support
  • Assist in developing ongoing learning opportunities for students that will prepare them to serve effectively in a highly diverse society grappling with persistent racial, social, and economic inequities.
  • Plan, implement and assesses DEIB programming and training for law faculty and staff, including on topics such as combatting racism, first-generation student success, gender inclusion and cultural competence.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff to enrich DEIB efforts in our curriculum, classrooms, and co-curricular programs and consult with individual faculty as requested.

Student advising and support
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students and other senior leaders, develop and implement multi-faceted support services to enhance the academic and professional success of first-generation students and students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
  • Provide individual counseling and ongoing support to first-generation students and students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession.
  • Mentor and support the law student affinity groups.

Recruiting, admissions, and pipeline programs
  • Assist the Office of Admissions with outreach to and recruitment of underrepresented and historically marginalized students, including attending admissions-related events both on and off campus, and serving as an additional point of contact for underrepresented students during the admissions process.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions on student recruitment, including on pipeline initiatives.

External relations
  • Serve as the School of Law's representative in relevant University, community and professional activities and groups.
  • Collaborate alumni relations professionals to enhance the law school's relationship and engagement with its alumni from underrepresented groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to envision, identify, develop, implement, and assess systems, policies, training and programs to foster a healthy and inclusive law school community.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with students, faculty, staff and alumni.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to work independently and with a variety of constituents, establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines. Demonstrated ability to convey complex issues and objectives clearly and plainly, orally and in writing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks independently; ability to work independently and in teams.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • J.D. strongly preferred or advanced degree in an appropriate field required.
  • At least five years of relevant experience.
