Job Summary/Basic Function:
The primary role of this position helps students by counseling/coaching on career exploration, career planning, the job search, preparing and competing for experiential learning opportunities, professional employment, and graduate and professional school opportunities. The position also works with college faculty and administration to help embed careers.
Department Overview:
Career Services is a comprehensive and centralized department that supports current students and alumni with career development, experiential learning, and employer connections. We support students as they explore, gain experience, and articulate their story. Boise State University's Strategic Plan - Blueprint for Success includes the goal of improving educational access and student success. This incorporates integrating career education and experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum and the student experience to improve career readiness and post-graduation outcomes. Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.
Essential Functions:
60% of Time the Career Counselor must:

  • Provide counseling, coaching, and facilitation of career related one-on-one appointments, presentations, and workshops. This requires formal training in career counseling theory and practice, test assessment, and in-depth knowledge of career information and career trends.
  • Conducts individual and group/class sessions with students and alumni providing interest and skill assessment, values clarification, career opportunity/trend information, and counseling.
  • Engages students in career exploration early and throughout their academic career.
  • Promote experiential learning opportunities with the goal of transforming the students' university experience.
  • Advise, teach, and prepare students and alumni individually and/or in workshops on resumes, cover letters, applications, job search techniques, interview skills, networking, internet usage, employer research, graduate/professional school research and application, and evaluation of job offers.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to students with respect to individual job search skills..
  • Ensure accurate data entry and reporting of all activity into the career development database, including counseling notes and outreach career activity.
20% of Time the Career Counselor will act as Career Development Liaison:
  • Act as a liaison to a designated college and/or campus organization and its students with a focus on the student's development and identity formation through program management, outreach, specialized career programming, collaboration with the designated college administration and faculty as well providing students resources and counseling options on career choice, experiential learning, and job search.
  • Collaborate with academic areas on career-related programming to enhance the student experience.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with partners across the university to promote student career growth.
  • Liaisons will provide classroom and non-classroom presentations regarding the career development and/or the job search process.
  • Develop and facilitate career related projects related to the liaison group that promote student growth and success
  • Advocate for Boise State University, and Career Services
15% of Time the Career Counselor will perform Group Facilitation:
  • Provide classroom and non-classroom presentations and workshops regarding Career Services' resources, the career development process, and/or job search skills. This may also include teaching college level classes on career development or job search skills.
  • Present multimedia presentations to small and large groups of students on unique career topics that may require research.
  • Plan and direct annual career topic focused programming including career fair preparation, professional school interview preparation, guest speaker panels, mock interviews, and job search preparation.
5% of Time the Career Counselor will perform:
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Requires in-depth, current knowledge of employer hiring practices and preferences, computer literacy in using web and internet applications, and strong interview skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus 2 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education Level: Master's Degree or equivalent in field of Counseling/Student Personnel

Experience: 1 year in similar type of work

Skills/Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of career-development and student development theories and practices
  • Counseling - Knowledge, awareness, skills and experience related to providing individual, multi-person and group counseling; multicultural competence/humility, empathy, advance listening skills, problem solving, wide repertoire of intervention strategies, knowledge of ethical principles, mastery of personal and interpersonal dynamics and assessment skills
  • Knowledge of employer recruiting strategies and policies, human resources, job market trends and occupational, career and employment information sources
  • Strong writing, presentation, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with and relating to a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships across a university campus
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Ability to problem solve and show initiative
  • Ability to conduct business with attention to ethical considerations, University policies and procedures, employment law and accreditation guidelines
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong working knowledge of various modes of appointment and presentation delivery, including in-person, video conferencing, email and phone
  • Ability to train and develop new career counselors and help create professional development opportunities for the staff/team
  • Salary and Benefits:
