Job Summary

We welcome applications for a CIRES/ NOAA GML Temporary Researcher within the University of Colorado Boulder. In light of the damage caused to the access road to the Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO) by the recent eruption of the volcano, the Observatories and Operations (OBOP) group is hiring a Temporary Researcher to provide consulting services and make recommendations to restore vehicle (road) access and power to the observatory. Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML)

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • The individual will provide recommendations and consulting services to the appropriate OBOP federal official who will be responsible for all final decisions and contractual arrangements.
  • Coordinate communication with HI organizations.
  • Facilitate and schedule meetings.
  • Review construction plans.
  • Assess feasibility of construction plans and timelines.
  • Assess environmental impact of project.
  • Make recommendations to GML Management.


What You Should Know

  • This is temporary position and is ineligible for benefits besides those required by law. This position accrues 0.034 hour of sick leave for every hour worked.
  • The appointment nominally supports one day per week effort for a period not to exceed 12 months or until the road and power service have been repaired, whichever occurs first, but it may be terminated earlier than that for any reason.
  • This position has no authority to negotiate or sign contracts for work, only to make recommendations.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to align with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement. New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.


What We Can Offer

The hiring rate for this temporary position is $80 per hour.

What We Require

  • Master's degree in a related field.


What You Will Need

  • The individual appointed should have extensive prior experience with such projects and needs to be familiar with MLO operations.
  • Prior work on construction projects in Hawaii is also essential.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledgeable on construction projects.
  • Knowledgeable on assessing environmental impact.
  • Project management skills.
  • Knowledgeable about construction regulations in Hawaii.
  • Knowledgeable of environmental regulations in Hawaii.
  • Knowledgeable of local geography on the Big Island of Hawaii.
