GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Clinical Laboratory Technologist I (CLT I), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing.

Under general supervision, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist I (CLT I), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities may include the following under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor:

  • Perform routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids or tissues, according to laboratory policies, including tissue culture and wet lab duties; operation of automated harvester and cell scanner
  • Prepare samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies
  • Log in samples and review submitted clinical data to allow appropriate pre-analytic triage of specimens
  • Participate in assigned quality control or quality assurance activities and assist with ordering supplies or maintaining stocks
  • Participate in scheduled technical meetings and assigned wet lab aspects of CAP proficiency testing
  • Identify problems and bring them to the attention of senior technical staff. Assist with troubleshooting of workflows or equipment and other issues related to routine operations of laboratory, with supervision as required.
  • Keep current with regards to developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques
  • Participate in internal and external continuing education.
  • Additional responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.
  • Promote the mission and vision of Brigham and Women's Hospital and laboratories, and a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the laboratory staff.
  • Adhere to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control and safety plans
  • Performs any other duties as required, which may include but not limited to general laboratory duties such as processing specimens, logging in specimens, putting supplies away, washing pipettes, discarding laboratory samples, and racking samples.


  • Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university and 2 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty

  • OR
  • Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495.
  • Prefer some laboratory experience but will train.
  • ASCP certification or equivalent eligible.


  • SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • The manual/visual dexterity and skills necessary to operate adjust and make repairs to various types of automated and non-automated laboratory equipment.
  • Must understand laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
  • Must understand computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
  • Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately. Must be able to remain calm and productive under constant pressure and emergency situations, which can produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.
  • Must have neat and orderly work habits.
  • Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.


  • Must be able to perform as a team member, provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff.


  • Must be able to remain calm and efficient in challenging situations.


  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees and patients.


  • Excellent communication skills.


  • Knowledge of Federal, State, Joint Commission and other regulatory regulations.


  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Busy clinical laboratory environment.


  • Exposure to chemical and biohazard materials is expected (minimal risk when personal protective equipment (PPE) is used and proper protocols are followed)


  • Work requires frequent standing, walking and/or occasional lifting or carrying of supplies.
