Pharmaron (San Diego) is seeking a talented Clinical Veterinarian to join our Pharmacokinetics team. As a Clinical Veterinarian, you will play a vital role in providing medical and surgical care to laboratory animals, overseeing their clinical needs, and supporting our research efforts.

Position Description:

The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for ensuring good clinical care of animals on all studies in the vivarium, as well as animals off study (e.g., dog colony). In addition, the individual may participate in studies in the functional role of a Study Director to conduct and oversee surgical procedures, post-operative care, and diagnostic imaging.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Clinical Veterinarian will perform the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage the clinical care of all animals in the vivarium.
  • Develop and execute research studies to expand research capabilities.
  • Providing medical and surgical care for laboratory animals to ensure adequate and humane veterinary support.
  • Performing physical, ophthalmic, and other needed exams on laboratory animals.
  • Providing expertise on animal health, biology, physiology, and research methodology to scientific staff and technicians and training staff when necessary.
  • Reporting all animal care concerns and becoming involved in the resolution.
  • Aid in developing clinical training programs for the veterinary and research staff.
  • Provide clinical and technical support to internal researchers and external clients.
  • Write or revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure facility compliance with applicable regulations, client expectations, and current industry standards.
  • Provide clinical and technical support to internal and external clients regarding Pharmaron Research Models and Services.
  • Direct, implement and oversee health monitoring and genetic management programs, including interpreting laboratory results, developing, and implementing corrective actions, technical oversight of veterinary staff, and other related duties.
  • Develop and deliver clinical and technical training to Pharmaron veterinary staff, including efforts to continually refine and adopt new and best practices.
  • Perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical, and analgesic technical expertise/advice to facilitate protocol development.
  • Participate in internal/external inspections and quality assurance audits of Pharmaron operations and critical vendors.
  • Provide support for activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), including protocol review, program review, and facility inspections. May serve on the IACUC committee.
  • Aid in ensuring the facility is in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and standards that relate to animal care and use (e.g., USDA, FDA, and AAALAC).
  • May develop new or innovative surgical techniques or other procedural improvements appropriate to research studies.
  • May assist in management of the activities within Pharmaron, including providing direction to junior employees, scheduling activities, and personnel development of veterinary technical team.
  • Perform other duties as directed by Management.
Requirements:

Ability to perform duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Have the ability to provide veterinary care and interpret diagnostic test results (e.g., history, physical examination, sample collection, basic field tests, and interpretation of clinical laboratory and radiology results)

Must be flexible to work various schedules and hours as well as provide comprehensive, after-hours, and on-call coverage as needed. Rotate on-call coverage with the Attending Veterinarian and other veterinary staff.

Education:

Degree in veterinary medicine (DVM) from a US accredited veterinary program is required. Additional education in lab animal research (M.S. or Ph.D.) is desirable.

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of experience preferred.

Certification/Licensure: Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state is required. Ability to practice veterinary medicine in the work state is highly desirable. California veterinary licensure is required within 60 to 90 days of hire. USDA accreditation or application submitted within 3 months of hire. ACLAM eligibility or accreditation is highly desired.

Other: Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities are required.
