The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for a Core Facility Research Professional to support the daily operation of scientific services in the Human Immunology Core. This position will work collaboratively with the Faculty Director and Technical Director for the Human Immunology Core to support translational work and clinical trials at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Carver College of Medicine. The Human Immunology Core provides correlative science support for clinical trials testing novel treatments for cancer and other immunological diseases. The techniques used in this core include multi-color flow cytometric analysis of human immune cell phenotypes, measurements of cytokine levels in various clinical samples through techniques such as ELISA and ELISpot, and measurement of autoantibody levels. The Human Immunology Core has recently acquired the capacity for multicolor imaging of tissue samples. The individual in this position will provide day-to-day experimental support and expertise of the Human Immunology Core, with a special focus on developing and optimizing panels for multiplex tissue imaging and performing multiplex imaging experiments for both human and mouse tissue.

Duties to include:

Specialized Services/Application of Research Protocols:

  • Work closely with researchers, investigators, and other core personnel in conducting and/or developing highly technical and specialized scientific research procedures and experiments
  • Perform established research activities based upon protocols developed by Core Directors or other core staff
  • Develop and optimize protocols for multiplex tissue imaging system using the CellScapeä by Canopy Biosciences
  • Assist in the management of the storage, accessibility, and dissemination of data produced by experiments
  • Assist in certifying, maintaining, and calibrating equipment used in core
  • Coordinate with the Technical Director in the ordering of supplies
  • Record and monitor all supplies used for experiments as well as time spent processing samples, acquiring, and analyzing data
  • Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks describing purpose, experimental procedures, observations, conclusions, and next steps for each project/experiment
  • Execute and maintain safe laboratory practices and procedures
  • Provide experimental assistance and expertise to other core personnel when needed
  • Assist with customer communication, order processing, shipping, and billing
Literature Review/Data Analysis:
  • Read and review articles as directed by Core Directors for the purpose of improving the quality of service
  • Assist in performing data analysis for researchers using specialized data analysis software and generate figures for publication
  • Assist in interpreting experimental data
Educate, Train, and Consult
  • Assist in providing education, training, and consultation to core facility users and staff on highly specialized equipment or technology
  • Assist in providing advice and guidance to core users, including troubleshooting techniques
Facilities, Equipment, and Information Management
  • Assist, coordinate, and manage equipment facilities with Core Facility users
  • Assist in servicing, calibrating, and checking equipment for proper function
  • Assist with performing periodic preventative maintenance on facility instrumentation. May also troubleshoot equipment failures and arrange for repairs.
  • Remain current on emerging techniques, software programs, and instrumentation in field expertise
  • Provide input on new instrument purchases and technical support in specialized area of research
  • May assist with maintenance of the facility computer systems, specialized instrument control, analysis software, facility data server, data backup and archiving, and researchers' reservation accounts
Administrative and Financial Responsibility for Fee for Service Operation
  • Assist with administrative duties necessary for a fee-for-service facility operation
  • May assist in reviewing facility billing data, initiation of purchases of equipment, and analyze facility use data reports

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's in any discipline in biomedical sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1-3 year's experience with immunological assays including flow cytometry, ELISA, multiplex ELISA, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, image analysis, and cell culture
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multitask several different projects
  • Experience working in academic medical center or clinical research environment
  • Proficiency in the development and optimization of assays/protocols

Highly Desirable Qualifications
  • Background in bioinformatics and analysis of large datasets
  • Experience in the development and optimization of multiplex spatial omics panels, especially for Canopy's CellScapeä platform
  • Experience in the investigation of human immunology
  • Adept knowledge of the following programs: Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), Prism, FlowJo, OMIQ, FACSDiva, SpectroFlo, ROSALIND

Desirable Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa and University of Iowa Health Care policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Laboratory management experience
