Design Director, Hospitality & Enterprise 

Location:  Kohler, WI

Opportunity

As the Design Director, you will be responsible for orchestrating the work of project teams on all aspects of architectural and interior design at Kohler Co. for Hospitality and Enterprise projects.  The leader is expected to enhance the culture for design excellence through collaboration with the Beacon and Hospitality design leads to help establish and maintain a consistent standard of design excellence. Manage and develop a talented staff of architects, interior designers, and associated support staff. Only on occasion, identify, utilize and manage 3rd party architectural firms to deliver upon unique project requirements.

Maintain the Kohler standard of elegance and good taste. Steward of the Company's architectural image. Frequently mentor architects, designers and business owners on related standards. Collaborate on critical design elements with top-level architects, engineers, and business leaders. Demonstrate high degree of creativity, foresight, and judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding architectural programs and activities. Expected to deliver significant impact on primary architectural objectives. Contribute expertise on cross-functional projects in cooperation with other Kohler functions or outside consultants as necessary. 

Specific Responsibilities

Architectural Design

  • Responsible for maintaining the Kohler Company architectural and design standards, communicating the standards to project teams, and ensuring all new design and construction activities are consistent with the same.
  • Lead the team through all phases thru guiding, advising and mentoring other designers on project work, develop design direction and leading critiques.
  • Drive the origination and development of new design concepts.
  • Research the history (purpose) of a project/property and integrate recommended design concepts into the experience customers will have.
  • Act as a primary interface with clients. Work directly with the client, team members, and a wide range of consultants and collaborators both internal and external throughout the life of the project.
  •  Review and recommend all architectural designs prior to presentation to Business Unit Leadership and the Executive Chairman of Kohler Co.

Department Management and Project Execution

  • Recruit, train and develop a high performing team of qualified Architecture & Interior Design resources. Maintain skilled staffing level against forward-looking project workload requirements.
  •  Consult and meet the needs of business senior leadership on major project attributes, timing, capital, and financial planning requirements.
  •  Utilize and follow the Kohler Co Project Management Process (PMP). Monitor and evaluate project status reports on adherence to schedules, budgets, design, and acceptance criteria. Take corrective action as necessary to ensure project meets all business case commitments.
  •  Ensure adequate and accurate information/record is maintained for all active and completed projects including "as-built" drawings and specifications.
  •  Evaluate, recommend, and contract with 3rd party architectural firms on an as necessary basis.
  •  Plan for and ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements and permits.
  •  Plan and manage department operating expense budget.

Skills/Requirements

  • Position requires a bachelor's or master's degree in Architecture or Interior Architecture/Design from an accredited school and 15+ years experience working on Hospitality or Enterprise design/construction/remodeling projects.
  •  Significant team/people management experience is essential.
  •  A strong track record of creative, innovative design, and execution accomplishments is required, as is experience in luxury or hospitality projects.
  •  International project experience is highly desirable. Architecture or interior design professional license required. LEED accreditation preferred.
  • Travel (including International) up to 25% of the time.
