The News Team of Indiana University Radio & Television Services is seeking a hardworking, detail-oriented, well-informed, and digitally savvy individual to join the team as a Digital News Journalist.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Develops stories for our ever-growing online audience.
  • Works closely with the WFIU/WTIU News Bureau Chief, the Digital News Journalist provides editorial oversight of newsroom content produced for all its digital platforms. Whether as part of a team or working solo, this position ensures the WFIU/WTIU news site has exciting, appealing and current digital content daily that will encourage audience engagement and grow our audience.
  • Ensures all materials produced for Web meet the WFIU/WTIU News Bureau's program standards and practices, including standards for accuracy, fairness, objectivity, and balance.
  • Works independently to create web-only stories or web-first stories that are in-depth, visual and explanatory.
  • Generates ideas and processes for supplemental web content.
  • Acts as a news consumer who understands the public broadcasting audience and submits story ideas each day that are original and well-defined.
  • Produces and distributes a daily e-newsletter that includes the top news of the day and is emailed to thousands of people every day. Makes decisions quickly and independently.
  • Collaborates with reporters to build sortable tables, maps and infographics. Work with reporters to build out their stories for the web e.g.: adding slideshows, graphics, etc.
  • Builds audience through social media, engages with commenters on posts and encourages online discussion.
  • Reports directly to the News Bureau Chief.
General Responsibilities
  • Creates stories for multiple media platforms, including radio, television, podcast, and online productions, that meet production standards and deadlines.
  • Independently seeks out news focuses, researches information, interprets conflicting data, pitches ideas, writes in-depth articles, and prepares related program materials and segments for broadcast; research may involve time spent in the field conducting interviews.
  • Ensures all materials produced are engaging and meet professional journalistic standards and practices, including standards for accuracy, ethics, fairness, objectivity, and balance.
  • Serves as a consultant to Indiana Public Broadcasting stations and coordinates with stations to provide contributions to national and regional networks; manages partnerships with news organizations to ensure news coverage is representative of all parts of Indiana.
  • May review peer journalists' stories and offer content suggestions.
  • May manage social media content and activity.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in broadcast media, journalism, liberal arts, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred
  • Some experience in a related field
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$40,000.08 annually

Work Hours

Occasional night & weekend work will also be required
