The Role

This position is for an experienced mechanical engineer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83). The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting and leading engineering efforts associated with the disposal of CVN65 and the inactivation/disposal of CVN68 Class carriers. This includes development and application of governing specifications, various engineering studies, and interfacing with multiple disciplines, organizations, and the government to support efficient and effective planning and execution of inactivation efforts. Specific task areas include residual water determinations, review and update of inactivation guidelines, dismantlement studies, shipboard technical support, equipment reutilization management, and environmental impact studies.

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Must be capable of performing engineering calculations, analyses, cost benefit analysis, risk assessments and studies to support planning decisions. Shipboard visits may be necessary for problem resolution and may involve access to radiological areas. A working understanding of reactor plant systems and governing design documents is required as well as a familiarization with Propulsion Plant systems. Experience with engineering drawings, piping and mechanical systems, and working to established specifications and standards is required. Experience with Nuclear Temporary Support systems and working experience with radiological work practices is required. Applicant must have demonstrated ability to work independently, establish plans and milestones for accomplishment of significant projects, and lead and provide oversight for the work of other engineers. Experience with the Availability Work Package (AWP) development process is preferred. Knowledge and prior experience with 3-D modeling and drafting programs, such as AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, would also be beneficial. The applicant must have excellent communication, and organizational skills as well as experience and proficiency with formal written technical communication.
