Harper College is one of the nation's premier community colleges and one of the largest, serving approximately 30,000 students annually in Chicago's northwest suburbs. The College's academic programs prepare students for rewarding careers and for transfer to four-year universities. Harper offers associate degree and certification programs, advanced career programs, workforce training, professional development, continuing education classes, accelerated degree options for adults and developmental education programs. In 2022, Harper also received the distinction of being recognized as a Top 25 semifinalist for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

The English Department at Harper College, a two-year institution located 20 miles northwest of Chicago, seeks a faculty member for a full-time, tenure track position. The English Department is large and dynamic, with varied interests. Our students come to us from countries around the world, a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds, and every level of academic preparedness.

Candidates should possess expertise in Composition and Rhetoric as well as curriculum development. Additionally, candidates should exhibit a writing pedagogy that is responsive to students' varying skill levels and a mastery of strategies that foster an inclusive, supportive, and engaging classroom environment in any modality (face-to-face, blended, hybrid, or online).

The successful candidate will have a 4/4 load, consisting chiefly of Developmental Writing classes (ENG094/095/096) and Composition courses (ENG101/102). The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to teach Humanities, Literature, Honors Program, and Learning Community courses. In addition to teaching 12 contact hours per semester, a full-time English faculty member: serves on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees; holds six office hours per week (four of which must be on campus); and pursues professional development opportunities related to their discipline and pedagogy.

We seek a full-time colleague to begin in August, 2024.

Educational Requirements The strongest candidates will, by the time of employment, have one of the following: MA in English or Rhetoric/Composition; MFA in Creative Writing; PhD in English, Literature, or Rhetoric/Composition.Experience Requirements Two years college-level teaching experience is required with two years of community college teaching experience strongly preferred.Application Review Date: Applications are accepted until the position is filled, though priority will be given to applications received on or before November 15, 2023
