The Construction and Facilities Management Office is seeking an Environmental Health Scientist II to join our team.

Location: Construction & Facilities Management Office, Greenlief Training Site, Hastings NE
Examples of Work
Plans and conducts environmental health investigations and inspections of private and public water supplies and sewage/solid waste systems, recreational/campground areas; day care/group residential facilities, mobile home parks, swimming pools, state institutions, state and local public facilities, food programs, and other environmental locations and situations to evaluate these sites and to ensure compliance with applicable environmental health laws, regulations, and standards.

Collects samples of food, water, wastes, and other materials at appropriate sites to provide material for use in laboratory testing and analysis.

Prepares written and oral reports and correspondence concerning findings of investigations and recommendations for corrective action.

Develops and monitors corrective actions and compliance schedules to ensure that action is taken by violators of environmental health laws and standards.

Operates and maintains specialized equipment such as water test kits, thermometers, light meters, and cameras to ensure compliance with federal, State, and local health and safety regulations.

Consults with and educates the public, health agency staff, business proprietors and operators, and industry and government officials on environmental health practices to promote environmental health and to suggest methods of complying with health laws and standards.

Investigates training courses and seminars on environmental health programs to promote public understanding of environmental laws, regulations, and programs.

Analyzes and evaluates environmental materials and data to determine the existence and causes of violations of environmental health laws and standards.

Evaluates and approves plans and specifications for environmental health related systems including water an sewage treatment systems to ensure their adequacy and compliance with environmental health laws, regulations, and standards.

Recommends revisions of program procedures and techniques to agency management staff, and corrective actions to business proprietors and government officials, to resolve environmental health violations.

Investigations disease outbreaks, as assigned, to determine the nature and scope of epidemiological occurrences.

Prepares reports, exhibits, and other program information to provide material necessary to potential legal actions by the agency.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIRED: Registration as a Registered Sanitarian in the State of Nebraska.

PREFERRED: Minimum of 3 years of experience.

Special Note: Overnight and/or regular day travel outside the city residence is required of incumbents.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles of physical and biological sciences applicable to environmental health; the laws, regulations, and standards applicable to environmental health; the practices of public health sanitation; the modes through which diseases are transmitted; the practices of controlling and preventing diseases through environmental health; the operation of environmental health related systems including water and sewage treatment systems; the operation and care of environmental measuring and testing equipment.

Ability to interact with agency staff and the public to establish and maintain work and public relations; write technical reports; present information before groups to education and inform; communicate orally and in writing with public officials, business representatives, and the public; determine the time and location for conducting surveys and collecting samples; determine the causes and effects of public health hazards; assess and prioritize public health hazards and schedule compliance reviews; read blueprints, plans, and specifications; interpret and enforce environmental laws, rules, and regulations; compiles and analyze data relative to environmental health conditions.

Sufficient stamina to work outdoors in inclement weather and in environments exposed to physical hazards, infectious diseases, and toxic/hazardous substances.
