Description
The director of General Studies in the Office for Faculty Advancement and Student Success is accepting applications for its pool of part-time and temporary lecturers to teach one or more courses as part of its First Year Seminar (FYS).

All new first-year students will enroll in GENS 100 (1 unit) or similar course. These one-day-a-week, 50-minute sections are offered M-F from 8 AM to 4 PM. All sections will be taught in-person. Please visit the First Year Seminar (FYS) website for more information about the program.

We are seeking candidates with the following competencies or dispositions:


  • Understanding of the experience of the transition from high school to a large public university.

  • Student Success-Centered: Committed to student success in and out of the classroom, framing the classroom as a space to raise questions, explore ideas, and to cultivate understanding and intentional practices for individual, group, and community success.

  • Equity-Minded: Ability to create an inclusive space that is welcoming to the actual students in the class; students who may represent many identities, geographies, races, gender identities, LGBTQ communities, socio-economic backgrounds, religious practices, etc. and to prepare students for the experience of a vibrant and diverse learning community.

  • Ability to teach a pre-designed curriculum, connect it to student experiences, and bring the content to life.

  • Ability to build a welcoming culture in the learning environment across the duration of the semester; some skill/experience facilitating group discussions; presenting materials.

  • Knowledge of the Canvas Learning Management System: Class materials will be accessed via Canvas and student assignments will be submitted and graded in the Canvas LMS.

  • Commitment to a timely turnaround for graded assignments and responding to student emails/messages, and administrative requests.


Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree in Higher Education, Post-Secondary Education, Student Affairs, Educational Leadership, Academic Advising, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related fields with teaching experience at the university level; experience in individualized instruction; sensitivity to underrepresented populations in the university preferred.

Highly desired academic or professional background- Candidates that have substantive training, experience and/or education in Business Administration, Engineering, Leadership, or any of the STEM or Allied Health Careers are highly encouraged to apply.

  • Available to work schedule for Fall 2024. A two-day instructor training in August ( August 19-20 from 9 am to 4 pm; In-Person) and a weekly staff meeting during the fall semester (Monday or Tuesday at 12 noon) are required job duties of the part-time and temporary lecturer appointments.

Salary commensurate with credentials and experience, according to University policy.

Compensation

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Lecturer A (Range 2) - $4,530 – 6,056

Lecturer B (Range 3) - $5,405 – 11,994

Lecturer C (Range 4) - $6,190 – 13,172

Lecturer D (Range 5) - $7,794 – 13,797

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. Salary amounts are based upon the January 2023 salary schedule. The first pay warrant will be released on October 1, 2024.
