Innova Solutions is partnering with Cornell University to hire for an Ornithology Field Service Technician.

This position is affiliated with bird and biodiversity monitoring efforts run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics (birds.cornell.edu/ccb/). The Yang Center's highly interdisciplinary team of scientists, educators, engineers, students, and research support personnel is working with many national and international collaborators on a wide variety of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine bioacoustic research projects tackling conservation issues worldwide. The successful applicant will join the lab group led by Dr. Connor Wood (connormwood.com), which focuses on quantitative population ecology supported by landscape-scale acoustic monitoring programs and cutting-edge machine learning tools, notably the BirdNET algorithm.

Position type: Full-Time, Contract (3-months), April 15, 2024 - June 15, 2024
Location: Santa Clarita, CA
Job/ Shift Hours: Monday - Friday, Day-time hours
Compensation Package: $20.00 per hour with fully paid housing provided

As a Field Service Technician:

• Assist with passive acoustic monitoring of bird communities in Southern California.
• Place autonomous recording units in trees and retrieving them on a precise schedule
• Navigate to way points with a handheld GPS device, operating a 4WD vehicle on rugged roads, making independent decisions in the field regarding safety and scientific protocols
• Assist with data management (e.g. ensuring that sound files are named properly so they can be linked to the correct location)
• Follow strict survey protocols to ensure data organization, including keeping track of multiple sets of data forms and memory cards.
• Assist with data management by copying audio files onto multiple backup locations, digitizing data forms and maintaining equipment.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Bachelors degree in biology, ecology, or related field, OR equivalent experience
• Valid driver's license and be able to hike intermediate distances off-trail through rugged terrain while carrying equipment (~20lbs).
• Experience reading topographical maps and navigating with map & compass and handheld GPS
• Passion for biodiversity conservation
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color.
• Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
• Ability to work in California at field site locations.
• Familiarity with a GPS devices

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with passive acoustic surveys, acoustic data management and organization
• Interest in avian ecology and conservation
• Familiarity with the birds and ecosystems of Southern California
• Covid vaccination

PAY RANGE AND BENEFITS:
Pay Range*: $20.00 per hour
*Pay range offered to a successful candidate will be based on several factors, including the candidate's education, work experience, work location, specific job duties, certifications, etc.
