Green Coffee Lab Assistant

We are seeking an intern or part-time position - perfect for a college student looking to make their own hours in a lab setting. You will learn to cup coffee and evaluate sensorial attributes, while coordinating special projects which will impact our green coffee and commodity initiatives. In addition, you will be a part of our MZB-USA family, learn about our company culture, interact with senior leadership, and develop your professional network.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Green Coffee Lab Coordinator, the primary responsibilities for the person in this role will be to roast small-batch lab samples, prepare and breakdown cuppings, and record data. This role would be a great fit for someone who has just received a bachelor's degree in food science, quality, or related field, who will have the opportunity to become an expert in cupping and grading coffee, defect recognition, and selecting green coffee raw materials.

This role would provide good experience for those seeking careers in food science, food manufacturing / CPG industry, R&D, Quality, Purchasing, or Marketing.

Job Duties:

• Provide general technician support to the commodities team across the physical aspects of coffee
• Roast and grind coffee in preparation for cuppings and sensory analysis; includes breakdown and upkeep of cupping lab
• Complete physical and sensorial analysis of green coffee samples
• Organize the storage of green coffee samples
• Perform analysis of different coffee blends
• Conduct density, moisture, and size tests on all incoming green coffee samples
• Record analytical and sensory data into database
• Deliver monthly reports on analytical results
• Provide quarterly results on vendor performance quality data
• Learn all aspects of the cupping process (tasting, as well as full analysis of green coffee)

Qualifications & Requirements:

• College student preferred (great opportunity for students focused on food science, biology, and marketing)
• Experience in a quality or R&D department, as a lab assistant or technician for a food/beverage company preferred
• Food science background a plus
• One or more years of experience in a food or beverage lab setting, coordinating and testing samples preferred but not required
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced environment is a must
• Highly organized and detail-oriented skills required
• Proven proficiencies in data analytics, pivot tables, and PowerPoint
• Exhibits excellent communication skills
