  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens, and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.
  • Under close supervision, checks surgical case number and verifies in PowerPath.
  • Under close supervision, collects specimen from grossing room, follow AMP procedure for cassettes scanning.
  • Performs routine loading cassettes to processor, including inspection of processors for proper condition before and after loading.
  • Pulls and records information on PowerPath and AMP, including the cassettes, blocks, slides information, and tracking states of cases. Log appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system. Use PowerPath system to run worklist and report.
  • Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides. Prints labels as appropriate.
  • Under close supervision of work assignments, performs load and unload HE stainer for routine staining of slides according to instructions.
  • Coverslips prepared slides manually and utilizes automated systems.
  • Organizes slides for distribution according to Slides Sign-out Report, or according to requisition, worksheets.
  • Under close supervision handles lab supplies, properly receiving, loading, distribute and store supplies.
  • Responsible for filing, retrieval, and accurate record keeping of paraffin tissue blocks and slides.
  • Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine H&E staining on automatic strainers and processors. Prepares and maintains working solutions of routine special stains.
  • Under close supervision maintains laboratory equipment in proper working order, following appropriate laboratory safety protocols.
  • Performs washing of glassware and solution containers as needed
  • Mixes routine solutions for laboratory use.
  • Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
  • Follows all National Patient Safety Goals per The Joint Commission, as well as Laboratory and Hospital policies.
  • Identifies problems and brings to the attention of a more senior staff, Senior Histology Specialist, Manager, or Technical Director.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.


  • Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalency required. A.S., B.S. or B.A. in a biological/physical science highly desired. Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired. Computer skills highly desired.
    • Other qualifications described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1351-1495.
