Overview

Schedule Information:This position teaches a standard load of 15 credit hours per semester (30 credits per academic year). This may include release time to be given for chair/coordinator duties. Classes may be offered in day, evening, and/or online modalities. Instructors are also required to hold weekly office hours on campus to be available for student support.

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties: Harper College invites applications for a tenure-track full time faculty position. Faculty in this position will teach classes in our Architecture and/or Interior Design programs. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, promote classroom discussions and ensure student engagement. Additionally, focusing on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our student's educational experience. Other departmental responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing course syllabi, assisting in curricula development, promoting programs to district high schools and community events, chairing departmental advisory committees, advising, outreach and recruitment. Candidates should possess expertise in architecture and interior design.

Responsibilities of the position:

  • Prepare and teach a combination of traditional, hybrid and/or online classes
  • Develop innovative curricula that provides students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with industry needs.
  • Review and revise course materials and class offerings.
  • Assess student learning and assign grades.
  • Attend faculty meetings as required.
  • Participate in college governance and other aspects of academic life.
  • Maintain current knowledge of subject matter.
  • Adhere to current compliance trainings as mandated by the college, including compliance under Title IX "Responsible Employee" and, if applicable, Clery Act Campus Security Authority.
  • Select, prepare and maintain current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.
  • Teaches assigned classes as scheduled during the required scheduled times and places each academic semester.
  • Demonstrates incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands‐on and engaged activities).
  • Promotes development of critical thinking among students.
  • Actively participates in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities.
  • Consistently works to improve course quality, design, and course integrity through participation in the college-wide assessment of student learning.
  • Uses industry standard resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  • Collaborates with colleagues for instructional improvement.
  • Coordinates and supervises internships and clinical experiences for students as assigned.
  • Provide the Division and the students a syllabus that includes course objectives and student learning outcomes, course requirements, evaluation and grading criteria, contact information for additional resources offered by the college, and any other policies and/or information required by College.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions or examinations. Provide feedback in a timely manner on student progress.
  • Maintain office/discipline/grade/division records as required by the College.
  • Maintains and posts current teaching schedule and office hours.
  • Maintains current course syllabus and approved textbooks (and/or related instructional material).
  • Submit all grades (midterm and final) electronically on or before the required deadlines.
  • Encourage students to submit course evaluations, review course evaluations when available and use feedback to improve course delivery.
  • Revise and update course content as needed.
  • Participate, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of program advisory boards, college, division, and department committees.
  • Infuse technology into pedagogical approaches to teaching.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Departmental Duties:

  • Develop curricula and program syllabi for the department
  • Conducts program reviews
  • Assist in the selection of software, equipment and instructional materials
  • Work with advisors, staff, parents, and students to develop recruitment plan and monitor enrollment
  • Collaborate with campus partners to promote program and assist with recruiting prospective students
  • Assist in the development of print and digital marketing materials
  • Accurately maintain institutional, state, and federal records
  • Maintain a positive, working relationship community and industry partners
  • Meets with students, staff members, and other educators to discuss instructional programs
  • Work diligently to maximize student placements for career opportunities within the field or related careers.
  • Chair departmental advisory committee
  • Maintains good communication with Dean, Program Coordinator colleagues, industry partners and students
  • Knowledge and familiarity with technology and software including computers, and web-based sources such as Blackboard
  • Develop opportunities for student internships
  • Sponsor an approved student leadership organization and/or promote student participation in competitive events
  • Deliver learner-centered instruction at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs and meet student data reporting deadlines

Educational Requirements: A bachelor's degree in Architecture and/or Interior Design or related field. Minimum 5 years of work experience. Minimum 3 years of teaching or training experience at college level.

Experience Requirements: Applicants should have a minimum of five (5) years previous experience in design and development settings. Five consecutive years of architect or interior designer experience within the architecture and/or interior design industry. Registered Interior Designer in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Requirements:

A Master's degree in Architecture, Interior Design or related field with at least 18 graduate hours in Interior Design. Five years of subject-related college teaching. Ten years of architectural and/or interior design experience. LEED or similar certification.

NKBA Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer (CKBD) or Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD) or similar certification.
