About This Job

The Design System Engineer will be responsible for driving design system strategy from a development perspective. They will work closely with UX Designers and Researchers as well as product and software development teams to deliver reusable, scalable, and accessible front-end components based on Commerce Bank's continuously evolving design system. The Design System Engineer will be a primary contributor to architecture and design decisions for new UI/UX development and will use their knowledge of best practices and influence to increase adoption and usage of the design system. They will also help lead governance and oversight of the design system. Lastly, they will create front-end prototypes to facilitate usability testing as needed.

Essential Functions

• Engage with UX Designers and Researchers and other cross-functional teams to build and test reusable and accessible components based on the Commerce Bank design system

• Adhere to the creative direction established by the UX team as documented in style guides, design guides, and design libraries

• Author documentation, guidelines, and best practices for developer usage of design system components

• Create components and lead the maintenance, evolution, and governance of the Commerce Bank design system specifically as it relates to the component library

• Build working front-end prototypes to facilitate usability testing

• Rely on previous proven experience with design systems to help define the roadmap for the development side of Commerce Bank's design system

• Proactively engage with development teams across the entire organization to create the design system components which will be used to realize UX designs

• Act as a liaison between UX and development teams by providing guidance and coaching while also serving as an advisor to leadership

• Ensure adherence to WCAG AA 2.0 standards in all developed components

• Serve as the subject matter expert on accessibility standards in the development space and document best practices

• Evangelize the benefits of utilizing design system components to development teams and various stakeholders

• As part of the UX Center of Excellence, be the go-to resource for front-end development best practices

• Continuously explore tool and platform upgrades

• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• Broad knowledge of the UX field including atomic design principles

• Advanced proficiency in writing semantic, compliant, and accessible HTML and CSS

• Strong proficiency with JavaScript including Vue.js and working knowledge of other JavaScript frameworks such as React and Angular

• Knowledge of component-based architecture and ability to apply development techniques to design systems and web accessibility

• Familiarity with Figma and knowledge of other design tools such as Sketch and InVision

• Strong communication skills that exemplify an ability to communicate to all levels of the organization and across cross-functional teams

• Ability to help define design system governance and maintain version control of component library

• Able to communicate development techniques with development teams and stakeholders to influence and guide adoption of design system best practices

• Balance multiple workstreams at the same time while delivering high-value results

• Serve as a subject matter expert regarding component libraries

• Driven to identify opportunities of continuous improvement, and the ability to build strong relationships across the organization

• Comfortable working in an environment with a high degree of autonomy

• Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in a computer science, engineering, technology or design related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required

• 3+ years of experience creating, evolving, and maintaining components for a design system required

• 3+ years of experience developing front-end experiences preferably at an enterprise level required

• Proven experience with design systems concepts and tools, governance models, atomic design patterns, and usage of design tokens required

• Experience with leveraging Storybook to build, share, and document components at an enterprise level required

• Experience working in or collaborating with developers and other cross-functional team members in an agile software development environment required
