The Lead Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy/radiation therapy and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations under the direction of the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist. The Lead Medical Dosimetrist will spend 80% of time performing clinical duties and 20% on administrative work.

Essential Job Functions

• Provide leadership and oversight for regional Certified Medical Dosimetrist staff
• Coordinate the dosimetry work flow at Billings Clinic and outreach affiliates
• Maintain records of continuing education activity for dosimetry personnel.
• Maintain and update policies and procedures manuals for dosimetry.
• Ensure compliance with department, hospital, and state policies and procedures.
• Maintain accurate billing procedures.
• Manage all requests for treatment planning processes in a professional and timely manner that ensures high quality outcomes including rapid access to treatment by way of the highest quality plans.
• Embrace innovation to improve access to higher quality treatments that meet and/or exceed protocol requirements.
• Support all innovation, clinical trials, and research opportunities to improving outcomes for all patients.
• Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department/service.
• Following the dose prescription specified by the radiation oncologist, plan a treatment technique by means of computer and/or manual computations that will deliver a prescribed dose to a defined tumor volume.
• Coordinate treatment simulations and tumor localizations, including Computer Tomography for radiation therapy treatment planning.
• Supervise or assist in planning and the fabrication of compensating filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam modifying devices.
• Supervise or assist in the planning or the production of cradles, head holders, compensators, and other immobilization devices. Supervise the technology staff in the implementation of the treatment plan (correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment parameters).
• Perform dosage calculations in the patient's radiation therapy chart and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
• Provide technical assistance to the therapeutic radiological physicist when requested in radiation protection, qualitative and quantitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation therapy equipment.
• Assist the physician in special clinical problems, retreatments, etc.
• Teach applied aspects of dosimetry to students, residents, and new employees, as assigned.
• May be involved in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques. Keep current on new treatment planning techniques, devices, and methods.
• As directed by the Medical Physicist, provides support in radiation protection, machine calibrations, and equipment quality assurance. Assists in dosimetry measurements utilizing ion chambers, TLDs, and film measurements.
• Familiarity with all equipment in the dosimetry work areas including function, emergency shutdown procedures, data backup, and usage.
• Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

• Proven ability to work within cross functional multi-disciplinary teams.
• Proven ability to manage internal and external stakeholder relationships.
• Working knowledge of radiation safety and correct use of immobilization devices and other treatment variables
• Experience with IMRT, VMAT, SRS, SBRT, IGRT.
• Graduate level qualifications in a relevant area - a either Health care or business related.
• Travel when required to other sites and/or leadership meetings.
