POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced Lead Research Lab Tech to join our research group in the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School. Our research program is focused on inherited retinal degenerations (IRDs), which are important causes of vision loss. Genetic therapies such as adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene therapy and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing show great promise for treating IRDs in ongoing clinical trials. We are looking for an experienced cell and molecular biologist to join our team to investigate the genetic causes of IRDs, and to test potential genetic therapies to reduce or prevent vision loss from specific genetic forms of IRDs. The successful candidate will carry out a broad range of cell and molecular biologic experiments using cell and animal models of disease. Responsibilities will include planning and executing experiments, evaluating results and drawing scientific conclusions, preparing results for publications/presentations. The responsibilities will also include training junior lab members, and shared laboratory management duties.

The scientific environment of the Ocular Genomics Institute (OGI ) is rich. The Mass Eye and Ear (MEE) is a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School (HMS). The MEE and HMS are internationally recognized leaders in the creation of new knowledge and therapies to improve human health, and in the training of the next generation of scientific leaders. The research endeavor in the Department of Ophthalmology at HMS now includes over 400 investigators, representing nearly every specialty in eye research. This is the world's largest basic and clinical ophthalmology research enterprise, with investigators studying the normal function and mechanisms of disease for all parts of the eye. The OGI is part of this effort, with 14 principal investigators whose research programs are focused on studying the causes of retinal and optic nerve disorders, and developing gene and genetic therapies for these disorders. OGI investigators collaborate actively with other members of the biomedical research community at MEE and Harvard. The OGI is fully equipped with all of the instrumentation needed for state-of-the art molecular and cellular biologic research. Dr. Pierce is an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, which provides additional enrichment of the scientific environment. Dr. Pierce and members of his research group attend the weekly Medical Population Genetics program meetings at the Broad, with presentations by leading investigators related to both understanding genetic causality and development of therapies for genetic disorders.
