INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE FELLOWSHIP, LECTURER

The School of Interior Architecture invites applications for the 2024 Interior Architecture Fellowship. The full-time, nine-month position is to be awarded for 1- 3 years (based on experience and/ or promise of excellence) to support individuals who are at the early stages of their teaching career in the field of interior architecture. The appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer in the School of Interior Architecture at the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design in Knoxville. The position begins August 1, 2024, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. We seek an energetic, collaborative candidate with an innovative research and teaching agendas in interior architecture. An interest and ability in teaching design studio is critical, and experience with digital technologies is also highly desired. Current areas of interest in the school are:

Integrated technologies (e.g., interactive media, intelligent design, etc.); building systems (e.g., materials, furniture, lighting, acoustics, etc.); computer-aided construction technologies and graphic representation (e.g. building Information modeling, parametric and procedural modeling, generative ai, 3D visual effects software etc.); digital fabrication and robotics; healthcare and wellness; evidence-based design; universal design; workplace strategies; and sustainability, among other areas.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

The school offers a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture within a highly competitive professional program attracting over 600 first-year applicants across the United States in 2023. There are approximately 45 students in each cohort year, with the total number of students in the program equaling about 180. The school is located in the College of Architecture and Design with the School of Architecture, School of Landscape Architecture, and School of Design; we share the building with the School of Art. The position offers rich opportunities for cross­ disciplinary collaboration. The school is distinguished with recent national and international student and faculty awards, including Highly Commended in the International Undergraduate Awards and four consecutive years of students placing first and second in the national Gensler Scholarship. The program is accredited by the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).

 

ABOUT THE FELLOW'S JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The fellowship is a full-time, non-tenure track appointment Fellows will pursue teaching and design research, creative scholarship, or a critical project that broadens the discipline of Interior Architecture. The fellowship also requires a presentation and exhibit of the design research supported by a research fund. The fellowship recognizes outstanding design educators who link design activity and studio instruction in the discipline of interior architecture. A typical instructional assignment is a studio and a lecture/ seminar teaching a semester in all levels of the undergraduate interior architecture curriculum. The teaching load will be reduced by one course to 50% in the final semester to allow for the final development of the project exhibition and presentation.


Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Terminal degree

·         At least one degree in interior architecture, interior design, architecture, or related discipline

·         The ability to instruct undergraduate interior architecture studios

·         And instructional integration and competency of digital and analog skills in the design studio/classroom

·         Ability to thrive in a collegial and collaborative working environment

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Degrees in multiple disciplines

·         Demonstrated potential for successful peer-reviewed research, competition awards, or design awards

·         Studio-based master's degree

·         Professional experience in an architecture office, design firm, or evidence of an emerging research agenda
