Job Summary

Supervises and assists in the performance of custodial and maintenance work in the UMass Hotel. Maintains daily records, inventory of supplies, linens and equipment. Institutes a preventive maintenance program, carpet care program and makes minor repairs when necessary.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises and assists in the cleaning of offices, hotel rooms, hallways, and lobby and outside the hotel to ensure department standards are met.
  • Transports soiled and clean linen to worksites.
  • Institutes a preventive maintenance program of all locks, painting, faucets, carpet care, bedding to maintain department standards.
  • Supervises and assists in the emptying of waste barrels, garbage cans, recycling containers and other waste and trash receptacles.
  • Supervises and assists in the moving or changing of furnishings using manual or mechanical means.
  • Locks or unlocks premises and performs other similar security tasks in conjunction with the building rules and regulations.
  • Supervises and assists in sweeping, cleaning and snow removal on walks, terraces and steps in the immediately adjacent outside premises of the Hotel.
  • Requisitions cleaning supplies, cleaning tools and equipment using department forms and procedures; stocks pantries and issues supplies to cleaning staff; maintains an inventory of supplies in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  • Makes minor repairs in hotel rooms to ensure the rooms meet department standards (work not requiring a license).
  • Processes work orders and maintain general records of work done in the hotel.
  • Trains employees in cleaning and hotel operations following department guidelines and procedures for staff training.
  • Coordinates linen supply controls by updating a daily and monthly inventory to keep accurate records and proper supply levels.
  • Inspects and repairs hotel equipment such as vacuum cleaners and carpet machines to ensure proper operation and safety.
  • Handles guest luggage.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • At least one (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in hotel custodial or maintenance work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • Knowledge of the methods followed in hotel custodial work.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in hotel custodial work.
  • Knowledge of the standard procedures followed in the storage of custodial and cleaning materials.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Knowledge of how to operate a vacuum and power hand tools.
  • Knowledge of minor plumbing skills not requiring a license.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to maintain and operate various equipment in the hotel department.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Knowledge of the laws, rules regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing the activities of Auxiliary Services, UMass Hotel.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment used in hotel custodial service.
  • Completion of formal course(s) or in-service training programs.
  • Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    • Balancing, Carrying, Pulling, Pushing, Repetitive Movement, Standing, Bending, Reaching, Twisting, Lifting.

    Additional Details

  • This position is designated as essential personnel.
  • Receives direct supervision from Supervisor of Accommodation Services who assigns work and reviews performance.
  • Work Schedule

    • 40 hours per week; varies depending on department needs.
