About this opportunity:
The Optimization Engineer (Toledo) is key to achieve maximum gross margin and overall profitability at the Toledo Refinery and for the value chain. This position works closely with Toledo Operations, Oil Movements and Terminals personnel as well as with Marketing and Trading, Supply & Logistics (TSL) to develop short term operating plans that are optimized using the LP model. The person will support the execution of these operating plans and evaluation of performance through plan vs actual comparisons. This position is responsible for ensuring the optimization model (Asset LP) integrity is maintained through process monitoring and balancing for model tuning, as well as playing the lead role in model enhancements.

Additionally, this role is accountable for monitoring, reconciling, and reporting on physical inventory movements impacting daily exposures and P&L. Schedulers are responsible for the safe, compliant, and value-optimized transport of product and the Sr Commercial Specialist supports that initiative, ensuring our ETRM systems of record are accurate across all commodities and all modes of transport.

This is a critical front office role which maintains and grows Cenovus's internal and external relations, enabling both transportation and sales optionality aligned with Cenovus's commercial strategies.

Responsibilities:
  • Planning Responsibilities
    • Collect required data from crude supply, products supply and marketing (including asphalt), to run the refinery LP model to generate operating plans for monthly planning
    • Collaborate with Asset Process Engineers and Schedulers to identify and apply constraints appropriately in the refinery LP
    • Lead and facilitate the Cross BU planning team (Crude, Products, Refinery) in the analysis of LP results and recommending the optimal refinery operating plan
    • Publish monthly operating plans for approval and integration into weekly production scheduling
    • Act as a key team member in the respective Value Chain (representing Asset Optimization) and participate in commercial/operational planning meetings
    • Work with Asset Schedulers and Process Engineers to support the execution of the monthly Value Chain Operating Plans
  • Optimization Responsibilities
    • Identify, evaluate and develop short term and/or in-month profitability optimization opportunities (in-gate)
    • Work with Asset Process Engineers to support the execution, monitoring and tracking of the implemented optimization opportunities
  • Retro Analysis Responsibilities
    • Manage Asset LP versus actual performance tracking process; plan versus actual reporting; and LP model backcasting, collaborating with the Value Chain team on a monthly retro and opportunity analysis
    • Compare predicted Asset LP results to actuals generated by yield accounting/daily reconciliation
  • Model Custodian Responsibilities
    • Own the Toledo Asset LP
    • Manage the Asset LP model tuning process in collaboration with Asset Process Engineers
    • Tune and update the Asset LP with process data from unit balances, process monitoring tools, various stream data, and other technical plant information
    • Coach the Asset Process Engineers to analyze unit yield performance, perform unit balancing, and to manage their HYSIS models to close LP model and actual gaps
    • Design and implement LP model enhancements as required
    • Ensure Asset LP updates are communicated to the Value Chain Planning Engineer and changes are integrated into the Value Chain LP
  • Long Range Plan/Budget
    • Lead the Toledo inputs in the annual strategy, budget/LRP processes as well as act as the liaison to translate and implement other strategic Downstream activities
    • Support the downstream hopper process and evaluate projects throughout the year for inclusion into the planning process
  • Asset Support
    • Support Asset teams with Scheduling and/or Process Engineer backfill during vacation or TA
    • Member of the refinery Incident Command System (ICS) filling roles as trained
    • On an as needed basis, support the Asset Project Engineering team with economic evaluations of low-cap/no-cap, longer term, strategic growth or capital projects for the asset specific safety and/or other training, Town Halls, etc.
Qualifications :
  • Must be legality eligible to work in the United States
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) required. (Chemical Engineering Discipline) preferred
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in Process Engineering and/or Economics & Scheduling roles at a Refinery or Upgrader
  • In depth knowledge of Refining and/or Upgrading process and economics
  • Strong understanding of the key Refining and/or Upgrading margin drivers (feedstock costs, product values, fixed and variable operating costs)
  • Strong analytical thinking skills, problem solving skills and a drive to continually learn and improve
  • Solid foundational leadership skills in collaboration and communication
  • Previous work experience in crude or finished products marketing roles, or supply & logistics roles is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Experience using optimization models/tools for commercial and asset optimization
  • Prior experience with LP model software and experience using models/tools for commercial and asset optimization
  • Knowledge of various Schneider or AspenTech software (Spiral, ROMEO, PIMS HYSYS, AORA)
  • Ability to read, interpret and evaluate crude oil assays
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with plant process monitoring and trending programs (PI, ParcView or Other)
