Summary

This position provides mental health counseling services to detainees with diverse and complex backgrounds. Typical duties include determining the appropriate counseling based on the detainees’ needs, case management and treatment planning, and following-up with the detainees in a timely manner.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews records, psychological evaluations and social history assessments of detainees arriving at the facility. Conducts interviews with detainees and presents relevant mental health information profiles to the members of Classification Board.
  • Assists with individual treatment by evaluating the detainee’s functioning and behavior. Conducts interviews and gathers historical, legal and technical data to develop the most effective type of intervention. Makes appropriate referrals for treatment to other mental health professionals, as needed.
  • Maintains detailed case records and official reports on detainees. Charts and reviews treatments provided. Maintains statistics on the number and type of detainees seen.
  • Develops programs such as work skills, interpersonal relationships, leisure activities and life skills to assist detainees as they prepare themselves for reentry into the community.
  • Communicates and coordinates activities with other staff members as part of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Maintains contacts with outside agencies, community resources, employers, volunteers, etc. to implement rehabilitative and social services programs to inmates.
  • Serves as a member of the Review and Reclassification Board. Provides mental health information regarding detainee housing and work assignments.
  • Ensures that all facility rules, policies and procedures are reinforced.
  • Provides emotional support and encouragement to the inmates and their families.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Counseling or counseling related field.
  • Current license as a professional counselor in the state in which the facility is located or licensure/certification in accordance with contract requirements. (Current copy of license must be on file at the facility at all times.)
  • Two (2) years of experience as professional counselor. Previous experience in a correctional environment is preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate mature, professional, cooperative and emphatic to programs needs and facility staff an inmates.
  • Ability to complete accurate and comprehensive reports in a timely manner.
  • Ability to use computers and the software applications typically used by the department.
