Packaging Engineer, Level IIPosition Summary

Primary Purpose

To design, develop, and commercialize new packaging for high speed manufacturing of confections and fruit snack products and will maintain and evolve a sustainable packaging program to be in alignment with internal and industry targets. The Packaging Engineer will also provide general technical support for initial production runs and troubleshooting of packaging lines at internal and external production locations. This position will develop, lead and execute plans and protocols to launch new products.

Major Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Owner of product packaging transition to sustainable materials leading implementation of technical solutions that align with Ferrara's sustainability strategy ensuring that the right technical solutions are developed for product distribution.
  • Sustainable packaging lead on projects from concept through commercialization to plan and execute comprehensive qualification & validation of new packaging and equipment systems against robust timelines and within package sustainability guardrails.
  • Create an innovation portfolio of new and emerging sustainable packaging options for product innovations, promotional displays, graphic refreshes and customer specific packs across all product types and brands.
  • Participate in packaging associations and utilize global networking in the industry to ensure Ferrara stays abreast of latest trends, technologies, and state and federal regulations for consumer product packaging.
  • Coordinate performance testing, qualifications and validations (i.e. shelf life) related to key package dimensions & critical consumer attributes.
  • Create technical specifications for finished goods and packaging materials
  • Perform solid root-cause analysis and technical problem solving to issues with current packaging and good technical design practices on new designs.
  • Develops ideas, concepts and prototypes to solve problems and meet customer/consumer needs in new and superior ways
  • Ensure key internal stakeholders including marketing, sustainability, R&D packaging, finance, and others align with and adhere to sustainability initiatives and priorities.
  • Lead reporting efforts for packaging sustainability to ensure compliance to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation commitment.
  • Plans own workload to ensure tasks and objectives are completed and collaborates as a participative team member to ensure milestones are met
  • Work with the plants to drive overall efficiencies related to packaging (i.e. cost savings, reducing changeover time, consolidation efforts)
  • Engage in consumer research activities such as ethnography observation, focus groups, etc. Converts consumer hypotheses and insight into packaging ideas, quickly reducing those ideas to functional and testable prototypes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Working knowledge with multiple materials and processes in various distribution environments including rigid plastics, flexible materials, corrugated and paperboard packaging and labels.
  • General knowledge of GMPs
  • Packaging material processing specification knowledge including extensive knowledge of packaging machinery
  • Demonstrated ability to perform as a contributing member of cross functional teams, including ability to communicate with all levels of the organization, including senior leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to 25%.


Education and Experience
  • BS degree in Packaging Engineering/Science discipline
  • 5 - 10 years' experience
  • 3 - 5 years' experience leading projects and/or teams
  • Project management of packaging validation and qualification.
  • Experience with sustainable packaging initiatives
  • Experience with TOPS or CAPE Shipper/Palletization software
  • Experience with SAP and skilled with Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, Access)
