Description:
Loyola Medicine, treating the whole person with compassion-to \"also treat the human spirit.\" The Laboratory Department seeks a Phlebotomist to collect quality biological samples for laboratory testing from all patient populations.

Shift: Full Time Evenings
Hours: 2:30pm - 11:00am Monday through Friday
8 hours shift
In this role, the Phlebotomist uses approved techniques to collect quality biological samples for laboratory testing from all patient populations (pediatric through geriatric); and performs electrocardiograms (EKG's) for cardiology interpretation, all while focusing on the needs of the patient and exemplifying the service excellence goals of care, concern, respect and cooperation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique, which maintains the quality integrity of the specimen to ensure valid test results. Correctly performs and transmits electrocardiograms for interpretation. Maintains a safe, neat & orderly work environment.
  • Communicates effectively and respectfully with patients and family members to meet their needs during phlebotomy and EKG procedures. Correctly identifies patients prior to phlebotomy. Provides clear instructions to patients for patient collected (non-blood) specimens. Consistently maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Correctly releases tests ordered by physicians in EPIC using order release guidelines and/or accurately enters test orders from manual requisitions. Accurately enters phlebotomy and EKG charges.
  • Maintains awareness of and adheres to all regulatory requirements (CLIA, CAP, IDPH, Joint Commission, etc.)
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement activities as directed by supervisor/manager. Utilizes time and resources effectively to promote quality, cost-effective outcomes.

Position Requirements

Required:
  • High School Diploma plus training acquired through work experience or education
  • Less than one year of previous job-related experience
Preferred:
  • 1-2 years of previous job-related experience
  • Associates Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education

Licensure/Certifications:

Required:
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP)
  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
  • Other: Required phlebotomy certification and CPR must be obtained within 90 days of hire. Certifying agencies: ASPT - American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, NCCT - National Center for Competency Testing, NHA - National Healthcare Association (CPT), NPA - National Phlebotomy Association
