PLANNING & LOGISTICS MANAGER (PLANT)

Primary Summary:

Strategic scheduling of equipment and resources for both requested and promised delivery dates to best service customers. Manage inventory levels to optimize service levels and manage working capital. Ensure communications between Planning/Logistics and Customer Service are timely and clear. Use current systems for reporting monthly metrics. Ensure timely sampling and resource allocation to meet customers’ delivery expectations. Ensure bills of material (BOM), mold, raw materials, packaging, labor, and cycle time information are accurate within the enterprise resource planning system (ERP). Develop and lead a high-performing team. Lead the logistics teams to ensure shipments are fulfilled in a timely manner, perpetual inventories are maintained accurately, and freight costs are minimized.

Responsibilities:

Production Planning / Scheduling

  • Maintain finite schedules and labor requirements as far out as demand requires, for 80 work centers. Ensure those schedules are adjusted to reflect changes in customer requirements, material receipt delays and production constraints
  • Ensure those schedules are optimized for labor, maintenance and FG / WIP inventory while meeting on-time delivery targets
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure engineering, operations and sales samples are scheduled in a timely manner
  • Analyze demand data and forecasts and calculate the capacity utilization of specific molds, machines, and work cells
  • Recommend needed capacity additions to support forecasted demand at targeted lead times
  • Ensure all Bills of Material (BOMs) are accurate: mold, work center, raw materials, packaging, labor, speed. Review variances with production, take actions to correct and update routing information as necessary

Procurement / materials replenishment and management
  • Work with purchasing manager and corporate procurement to select, manage and communicate with vendors
  • Schedule deliveries of raw materials, purchased components and supplies
  • Direct raw material inventory control and materials storage, ensure accuracy of the perpetual inventory system
  • Manage excess and obsolescence to minimize the financial exposure to the business caused by a change in demand to an existing product or a discontinued product
  • Drive inventory reductions by implementing improvements in areas including but not limited to material planning, supplier stocking programs and vendor managed inventory

Warehousing and logistics
  • Oversee shipping and receiving functions in two warehouses
  • Establish and enforce processes to manage inventory including but not limited to cycle counting and full physical inventory counts
  • Ensure all safety and environmental policies are being followed in area(s) of responsibility with focus on forklift and loading dock safety
  • Identify opportunities to reduce transportation costs and charges
  • Deliver goods on time, in full, and free from shipment defects
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

General management
  • Use ERP materials resource planning, inventory management, work order management, auto replenishment and forecasting modules to minimize costs, reduce lead times, maintain delivery performance goals and proactively respond to areas of inefficiency.
  • Use weekly and monthly performance metrics including key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive performance improvement.
  • Communicate supply and demand information throughout the plant so that stake holders are aware of key information and metrics
  • Develop and sustain open and productive relationships with key corporate and operational personnel
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with appropriate industry and professional organizations/associations to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge encompassing best practices and technology
  • Manage staff in planning, procurement and warehouse areas of the plant including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

Management
  • Manages a team of 5: two production planners, one procurement manager, two warehouse supervisors.


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or Accounting.
  • 10 years related experience and/or training in a complex manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • APICS Certified and Lean Six Sigma Certification.

Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to walk through plant operations, perform inventories, and gain a working knowledge of plant floor operations.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and lift or move up to 10 pounds.

Work Environment:
  • Manufacturing Environment
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mobile equipment, truck courts, and lifting devices to verify inventory.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
