Who We Are:

As a recognized leader in space science research and spacecraft instrumentation, we are helping to reveal the secrets of our solar system and the universe. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics who can collaborate with our team in ongoing studies of the solar dynamo.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Conduct numerical modeling of stellar interior convection with a focus on those dynamics associated with small-scale magnetism.
  • Contribute to the development of a theoretical framework for understanding the physical implications of recently-discovered inertial waves in the solar photosphere.
  • Contribute to the continued development of open-source fluids software packages such as Rayleigh, Dedelus and Coral.
  • Develop and grow an independent research program through external program support
  • Participate in solar group proposals that support the strategic growth of the department.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Independently develop and implement numerical experiments and theoretical investigations designed to examine angular momentum transport and magnetic field generation in stellar interiors.
  • Perform analysis and visualization of fluids simulation data.
  • Assess resulting trends in light of physical conditions expected inside stellar interiors.
  • Present and disseminate research results at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.
  • Contribute to weekly SWRI Solar group meetings and Boulder Convection Group meetings.
  • Actively seek and apply for external support of research activities.
Requirements:
  • Requires a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Solar Physics or related degree field.
  • 2 years: Post PhD experience in scientific software development using compiled languages such as FORTRAN and C/C++.
  • 2 years: Experience in parallel programming using the MPI and OpenMP standards.
  • 2 years: Experience in Python programming and in the use of Python data analysis packages such as NumPy and Matplotlib.
  • 2 years: Experience in the application of computational fluid dynamics software (e.g., ASH, Rayleigh, Dedelus, Magic) to the study of stellar and planetary convection.

Special Requirements:

Work assignment is in Boulder, Colorado. This is a 1 year limited term assignment.

Job Locations: Boulder, Colorado
