Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for a Principal Civil / Structural Engineer with extensive experience in the Energy or LNG industry.

Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation assistance or per diem.

The Principal Civil / Structural Engineer is responsible for providing technical assurance and leadership during the development and detailed design phases of the regasification, liquefaction, infrastructure, and renewable projects being developed. The work includes, but is not limited to, site preparation, foundation design, structural steel design and building design. The Principal Civil / Structural Engineer will monitor the EPC Contractor deliverables to ensure the designs are safe, fit-for-purpose and meet industry codes and project specifications. This role will also oversee the construction and installation of related civil and structural activities, including site preparation work. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Leads assigned phases of the technical development, design, and implementation of site works and facilities associated with the project
  • Coordinates the development of detailed engineering documents, design drawings, technical specifications, studies, reports, analyses, and schedules required to support project
  • Facilitates quality assurance reviews of engineering documents and drawings to ensure compliance with industry codes, project documents and project schedule. Evaluates and endorses EPC Contractor's engineering techniques, procedures, and design criteria to minimize site work and associated costs. Ensures the use of efficient construction techniques and scheduling to support readiness for early works
  • Supervises activities of the civil / structural project team to ensure accuracy of work; responsible for maintaining performance against scope, budget, and schedule. Works closely with EPC design engineers to ensure effective performance and control of expenditures
  • Serves as a technical expert for all civil / structural related design and implementation issues, and interfaces with civil / structural contractors and sub-contractors
  • Provides status updates to project management team and recommends solutions for conditions and activities that may impact the development, completion or performance of project and facilities
  • Leads the review of civil / structural studies including, but not limited to, geotechnical, civil site preparation, storm surge, and modularization studies
  • Facilitates project design meetings, reviews, and workshops to lead project activities; effectively applies knowledge of safe-work processes and procedures to ensure the design and installation are safe and practical
  • Reviews the EPC Contractor's deliverables, submittals, material/equipment selections, construction plans and procedures; ensures that all construction activities conform to the project design documents and project specifications
  • Supports project construction by resolving design, installation, and interface issues that arise at the project site during construction. Tracks construction activities to ensure progress is compliant to overall project schedule
  • Supports update of Engineering Knowledge Bank and shares lessons learned


Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 years of experience in the Energy or LNG Industry
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering discipline
  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering is preferred
  • PE or SE license is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge and use of advanced Civil / Structural Engineering principles / techniques. Detailed knowledge of technical principles in other related disciplines (Instrumentation & Controls, Electrical and Mechanical)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Civil / Structural industry codes, regulations, and standards; advises on use and applicability
  • Advanced knowledge of construction practices / techniques, project controls, and safe work principles
  • Able to understand client work practices, policies, and procedures and how to apply them
  • Understands key activities, milestones and deliverables at each project stage and factors that may impact the development or completion of project / facility
  • Well-developed technical skills with ability to resolve almost all technical scopes of work arising within work area
  • Accountable for a larger and / or more complex scope of work that requires a high degree of competence
  • Capable of assigning work and providing civil / structural technical guidance / advice on multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret civil / structural drawings, diagrams and reports including plot plans, equipment arrangement, and Piping and Instrument Drawings (P&IDs)
  • Advanced proficiency with Civil / Structural software packages; comfortable learning new tools and technologies
  • Resolves complex technical problems and situations using various analytical methods; may go beyond primary discipline
  • Anticipates problems or issues within area of expertise and applies sound judgement to mitigate issues
  • Immediate supervisor provides general guidance to ensure overall objectives are being met; self-directed on daily work activities
  • Able to independently evaluate EPC Contractor designs and make technically complex decisions / recommendations
  • Results of work are reviewed on critical tasks
  • Able to prioritize tasks and handle high-priority issues within deadlines
  • Ability to concurrently manage multiple assignments / tasks with competing deadlines and delegate work effectively
  • Assigns and delegates work within discipline team and coordinates work across disciplines
  • Anticipates issues and uses judgement and experience to help the team handle multiple demands or changes
  • Provides technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced colleagues
  • Encourages the exchange of productive ideas
  • Recognized as a qualified technical practitioner and mentor. Peers often rely on judgment and conclusions

  • Stays abreast of current civil / structural equipment, design, and implementation developments through participation in Industry technical shows and committees
