Department Information

Earth & Atmospheric Sciences provides the foundation for understanding the Earth system and how human activity impacts our planet. It bears the responsibility for training the next generation of local, state, national, and international leaders to assume well-informed stewardship of the Earth. Our research studies how the Earth functions as an interactive system from its atmosphere to its core. It also explores how we, individually and collectively as a society, interact with the world around us.
Our department is home to 24 faculty in disciplines that include biogeochemistry, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, Earth materials, geophysics and tectonics, sedimentary geology, and paleontology, as well as about 8 postdoctoral researchers and 40 graduate students.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Audits, maintains, and reconciles IU, auxiliary, and IU Foundation accounts associated with IUGFS and other auxiliary accounts in department to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Assists Fiscal Officer and Field Station Director with the annual budget process.
  • Assists the Executive Director of the Field Station with data analysis and coordinates communications with alumni of the field station.
  • Coordinates visits of all internal and external users of IUGFS through IUGFS.indiana.edu.
  • Communicates with outside users, IU INLOCC and Legal Counsel on contracts and liability forms for outside users, and the IUGFS Resident Manager.
  • Maintains HIPAA compliance certification to handle student and staff records.
  • Responds to and coordinates with students and summer staff.
  • Provides clerical support to Executive and Academic Directors and Field Station instructional staff, including reprographics of course materials
  • Participates in recruitment efforts, including travelling to the Geological Society of America Annual meeting to staff IUGFS/EAS Department booth.
General Responsibilities
  • Conducts research and compiles materials and information for departmental programs.
  • Prepares records of program activities; oversees and ensures the timely processing and delivery of required materials.
  • Reviews the policies and procedures involved in departmental programs; suggests improvements; and ensures that rules comply with university standards.
  • Analyzes data and information generated or produced by program; writes reports and other written materials based on this data.
  • Verifies the accuracy of all data and information used or generated by program; resolves any discrepancies or problems.
  • Responds to requests for program information by staff, students, and faculty; handles any necessary correspondence.
  • Serves as liaison for department; coordinates activities and exchanges information.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
