Basic Function

Working in a team environment, Project Manager - Mechanical Design Lead is responsible for managing/developing and optimizing single discipline capital projects and ensuring business requirements are in line with the project objectives and deliverables. Responsibilities also include providing expertise and guidance to support project scope development for mechanical design efforts in estimating, detailed design, project execution, and coordination of capital and expense projects for site retrofit, revamp, expansions, debottlenecking of existing units and infrastructure facilities, turnarounds etc. The position interacts with other project managers, engineers, specialists, and technicians at the site, as well as interacts with corporate technical networks, peers at other locations, and vendors/suppliers to execute the capital projects and projects during turnarounds as required.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Managing assigned single discipline Capital Projects in a Gate environment budgeted up to $1MM
• Evaluating the assigned projects and designs to comply with Company Safety, Health, Environmental and PSM standards, specifications and procedures, and ensuring projects and designs adhere to them
• Developing the scope of the assigned Capital Project
• Ensuring the business requirements are in line with the project objectives and deliverables
• Developing the project plan for the assigned Capital Project
• Actively engage with the company and project safety culture and provide safety leadership where required
• Provide technical direction, supervision, and motivation over other Piping Designers, independently applying sound and diversified knowledge of design principles and practices
• Effectively plan and organize work including setting priorities for Piping Designers to meet project milestones for the piping portion of capital projects
• Responsible of drawing standards files in accordance with Company standards and leads the MOC group for controlled document updates
• Responsible for the technical adequacy and quality of the work
• Responsible for adherence to schedule requirements for the assigned task or project
• Responsible for the design and layout of complex piping systems, work with businesses and operations in developing preliminary plot plans and layouts by implementing loss prevention principles and global design safety standards
• Carry out preliminary studies to arrive at early project estimates, developing, maintaining and tracking cost estimates (BOM of the project and engineering work hours) for all stages of the project life cycle
• Accountable for the competency assurance in respect of piping designers for the delivery of engineering scopes and use of engineering systems
• Liaise with other engineering and technical personnel including personnel from other disciplines to ensure overall project goals are met as well as resolve constructability, operability and maintainability issues
• Supports requisitioning of piping materials, such as bulks, specialty items, piping mechanical components (valves, strainers, etc.), pipe supports etc.
• Responsible for complying with project change control processes for piping deliverables
• Responsible for reporting progress (for assigned scopes) in accordance with project control procedures
• Developing and maintaining Process Safety Management (PSM) regulated drawings

Min. Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in Engineering or applicable technical degree; degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred - Or a minimum of High School Diploma (or equivalent) with a minimum of 20 years of experience in piping layout design for oil and gas and petrochemical projects

Work Experience:
• A minimum of 20 years of experience in piping layout design for oil and gas and petrochemical projects is required
• Experience in successful execution of plant projects

Areas of Expertise; Requirements:
• Expert in International/ Domestic piping codes and standards, large capital projects and deep knowledge in ASME codes and standards
• Excellent plant design and piping layout concepts, knowledge in developing/troubleshooting piping layout, piping stress and pipe supports

Other Skills and Qualifications:
• Efficient at usage of MS Office tools
• Demonstrates ability to create and manipulate drawings in Smartplant and AutoCAD
• Proficient with computers, Smartplant and CAD software packages in standalone configurations as well as network setups
• Skills using tools such as SP3D and software review tools like SPR, Navisworks and LFM is preferred
• Project management skills, PMP certificate is preferred
• Demonstrated basic knowledge of AutoCAD and SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI)
• Demonstrated basic understanding of estimating tools and cost control
• Interpretation and application of industry codes and standards
