Primary Role

This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Operations of New Jersey American Water's Central region and supports operations by managing organizational initiatives and projects that cover safety, regulatory compliance, customer service, operational excellence, growth and continuous improvement. The Central region team includes more then 300 employees providing water and wastewater services to over 1 million people across Union, Middlesex, Somerset, Mercer, and Hunterdon Counties. With offices in Plainfield, Bridgewater, and Hillsborough, the position has flexible location opportunities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Work with various business departments and functions to prioritize, select and execute projects to successful completion
  • Lead project teams and manage project performance in a matrix organization.
  • Develop and manage relationships across the company to effectively deliver projects
  • Use critical thinking methods to drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities and executing projects.
  • Gather data from various systems, perform complex analysis, and translate to clear reporting to allow visibility to leadership.
  • Translating operational metrics into actionable recommendations.

Key Accountabilities

  • Drive execution of various types of projects including, but not limited to:
    • Safety focused improvements including administrative controls and physical assets
    • Internal and external regulatory compliance including implementing audit recommendations
    • Customer centered projects including work order and billing processes
    • Operational efficiency projects including resource analysis and business case preparation
    • Business growth activities at all stages of new acquisitions and bulk sales opportunities including due diligence, proposal development, public communication and campaign activities, contract management, and customer integration.
    • Employee engagement initiatives that drive cultural improvement
  • Prepares correspondence/provides information for distribution and/or presentation to other agencies, municipal departments, general public, special interest groups, property owners, contractors and consultants.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and SAP. Strong Microsoft Excel spreadsheet creation and analytics.
  • Strong project management skills (e.g. planning, organizing, directing, monitoring and reporting on project activities). A strong sense of organizational awareness and schedule, ability, resourcefulness, foresight and initiative to self-direct and prioritize a large number of often non-sequential tasks on multiple concurrent projects. Project planning skills: Good verbal and written communication skills (e.g. , presentation, listening, report writing).
  • Business systems literacy. Competent in the creation and use of word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, flow-charting, project scheduling. SAP experience preferred.
  • Financial management skill including budget management, business modeling, and basic accounting knowledge.
  • Thorough knowledge and use of office productivity tools including MS Office 365 Enterprise systems knowledge, SAP preferred, Statistical package experience (Minitab, SAS, SPSS or similar).
  • General knowledge of operations and customer billing practices, project management and construction management practices, and contract.

Experience/Education

  • Four year undergraduate degree in Engineering preferred or related business operations experience.
  • 3 years or greater practical business experience in functional or operational role with regulated utility or comparable business organization.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Technical, project management, operator certifications and/or licenses are a plus.

Travel Requirements

  • 20% but will vary depending on the project demands.

Work Environment

  • Typical office environment but will vary based upon project demands. Field visits to support project delivery as needed.
