The Lurie Center for Autism at Mass General Brigham and Mass General for Children, a multidisciplinary program designed to treat children, adolescents and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities, seeks a Staff Nurse to assist with phone triage, clinical outpatient ambulatory care, and clinical research care as needed.

The Staff Nurse will work with multiple medical providers at the Lurie Center. The staff nurse will provide direction and coordination of patient care for the pediatric and adult patient population with autism spectrum and other developmental disorders by obtaining medical histories, review of systems, and other clinical information; and, under the direction of a medical provider, relay information to the patient from the provider regarding treatment plan, medication changes, etc.

The Staff Nurse will help with patient education initiatives. The position responsibilities also include being a member of the patient safety/crisis team. Although there is some face-to-face interaction within the clinic, most of the clinical work with patients will be conducted via phone triage.

This is a 30-hour position that requires availability each day of the week (Monday thru Friday). As an ambulatory specialty clinic, the Lurie Center nurse schedule includes a combination of on-site and remote work.


Clinical Duties (85% Effort)

  • Provide professional guidance and support in relation to patient's health care status and to patient's age-specific needs primarily via phone triage with patients, families, pharmacies.
  • Ensure coordination of patient care among the department/clinic, other individual units and ancillary departments. Coordinate assigned outpatient clinical program and conduct ongoing evaluation of assigned areas. Collaborate with physicians, nursing leadership, and nursing staff to initiate, participate in clinical initiatives.
  • Coordination of care responsibilities will include facilitating orders for procedures from physician medical orders; communicating normal lab results to families; drafting "letters of medical necessity" for physicians; and providing anticipatory guidance and explaining side effects of medications to families.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served since the clinic serves patients throughout the lifespan. Maintain clinical competence related to a specific patient population through the direct provision of patient care and through professional development.
  • Provide to support providers so that all patients have vitals completed at the beginning of each clinic visit. Escort patients/families to/from the waiting room and exam room as needed.
  • Participate as member of Lurie Center Patient Safety Team including completion of Crisis Prevention Institute training offered on site and utilized to support Patient Care.
Clinical Research Duties (10% Effort)
  • Conduct study-related clinical procedures and interventions, including the completion of electrocardiograms, vitals, and phlebotomy.
  • Ensure proper collection, processing, shipment of specimens, and documentation. Communicate with laboratory staff, PI, and sponsors regarding laboratory findings. Maintain OSHA standards.
Other Duties (5% Effort)
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


Clinical responsibilities primarily focus on phone triage with patients and families. Research duties include assisting with patient visits in clinical research program including the completion of vitals, phlebotomy, and handling, processing and shipping biological specimens following universal precautions for blood processing, handling and shipping.


  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program required
  • BSN strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required for new graduates.
  • At least one year of clinical nursing experience required.


Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.


  • Exceptional attention to detail; excellent organizational skills and ability to follow directions.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • High degree of computer literacy; knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite and data management programs.
  • Experience with individuals with autism/autism spectrum disorder and their families desirable.
