Objectives of this Role:

  • This position will participate in the research and development of experimental, laser-based, spaceflight instrumentation enabling in-situ geochronology investigations across the Solar System.
  • Publish original research and results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and present results at scientific meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Contribute to the design, development, and hands-on fabrication, assembly, integration, and test of instrumentation from concept to flight instrument delivery.
  • Collaborate on experimental campaigns leading toward the maturation of in-situ dating instrumentation towards increased NASA technology readiness levels.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Work with engineering personnel to design, build, and test laser-based instrumentation capable of in-situ isotopic geochronology.
  • Development and optimization of data acquisition / data processing tools via scripting in Python, MATLAB and/or LabView.
  • Preparation and dating of geological samples supporting concept of operations development for planned lunar missions.
  • Alignment and operation of class IIIb/class IV pulsed and CW lasers and investigation of new concepts for space instrumentation and contribution to proposal development for advanced isotopic dating schemes.
  • Presentation and dissemination of research results at professional meetings and conferences and publication of novel experimental results to peer-reviewed journals.
Requirements:
  • Requires a PhD in Atomic/Laser Physics, Optical Sciences, Geology, Geological Sciences, Applied Physics, Chemical Physics, Astrophysics, Geophysics or a related degree field.
  • 2 years: Experience in the design, development and implementation of experimental instruments for analytical science.
  • 1 years: Knowledge of laser safety and demonstrated lab-based work with high-power pulsed or CW lasers with ANSI Z136.1 designation above class 1.
