JOB DUTIES

  • Collects operational performance data to monitor production and assist in process improvement activities.  Meets with the foreman to review data and develop solutions to eliminate reactive down time. Collaborates with other areas and foremen to improve productivity and to reduce overall production down time.
  • Coordinates all activities related to rolling mill and finishing production.  Assists in planning work assignments based on production schedules and machine capabilities. Manages rolling mill and finishing equipment processes and troubleshoots malfunctions.    
  • Develops and documents process standards, capturing best production practices and setting clear performance expectations.  Creates and updates data reports on production performance.
  • Collaborates with Superintendent and Process Engineers on production processes to identify opportunities to increase efficiency, as well as safety, suggests revisions to operational methods and implements any needed process modifications.
  • Maintains the department safety functions; ensures that safety practices are promoted and upheld, and standards are maintained. Schedules safety meetings.
  • Oversees the roll shop manager, all rollers, all finishing foreman. Maintains MOS audits, and ensures compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Confers with management and process engineers on implementation of quality and reliability standards.  Ensures compliance with established quality and environmental standards.   
  • Assist with other projects as assigned by the Superintendent.   
  • Train operators in performing production tasks.  Prepare training/qualification documents illustrating the manufacturing process and how equipment is to be used.   

ENVIRONMENTAL

  • Works indoors 60% of the time; outdoors 40% of the time.
  • Must wear safety boots with metatarsal guards, earplugs, safety glasses, gloves, hard hat and hot coat while in plant. Occasionally, respirator.
  • Continually exposed to all types of dirt, noise and varying weather conditions. Within the plant, can be exposed to heat over 100 degrees.
  • Occasional use of tools/equipment on the mill.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Sitting: Occasionally sits up to one to two hours intermittently.  Sits in office chair at computer. 
  • Standing/Walking:  Frequently spends time walking. Standing surfaces include cement, stairs, flat surface, and metal grating.
  • Crouching (bend at knees): occasionally
  • Stooping (bending at waist): occasionally
  • Reaching: May reach up to five percent of the time at shoulder or waist height while helping in maintenance.
  • Twisting/Turning: Has option to move feet or twist waist or neck.
  • Climbing: Rarely.  May climb grated stairs up to once per week for inspection of particular areas.
  • Crawling: Rarely.
  • Kneeling: Rare to occasional when assisting with repairs.
  • Leg/Foot Use (to repetitively operate machine controls): Not required.
  • Handling/Grasping: Uses computer up to 30 percent of the time. Assists in troubleshooting the mill if necessary
  • Fingering/Feeling/Grasping: Rarely uses hand tools/hoses.
  • Balance: May perch at certain levels while machining on a part for equipment.  Occurs less than five percent of time.
  • Vehicle Use: Golf cart occasionally. 
  • Pushing/Pulling:  Not required.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Most lifting and carrying is 5-50 pounds

USE OF SENSES

  • Talking: Talks in person or by phone continually.
  • Hearing: Continually with managers and employees, in person and by phone.
  • Vision: Normal vision required.
  • Smell: Continually.  Sensitive to smells of fire, fumes or other possible machinery or equipment damage.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years relevant experience in steel industry.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills and mathematical aptitude.
  • Must possess strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
  • Must possess the ability to direct the work of subordinate staff, to train and to apply problem solving skills for conflict resolution issues that arise in area of responsibility.
  • Strong knowledge of the rolling mill industry including operations and plant logistics.
  • Strong knowledge of materials and equipment applicable to the rolling mill and finishing.
  • Ability to utilize data to analyze production performance and develop/implement solutions to increase productivity.
  • Proficiency with computer software programs such as Word and Excel and ability to learn and effectively use any other software specific to CSRM.
  • Compliance with all safety guidelines including the wearing of protective equipment and clothing at all times.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
