Summary:

The Hershey Company Memphis plant is a Non-Union plant producing products such as Ice Breakers, Breath Savers, and Good & Plenty, in a high-speed complex environment.

Under limited supervision as an independent worker, provide leadership and direction for the development of safety programs to ensure compliance with regulations, company policies, and the reinforcement of EH&S KPIs and deliverables.

Collaborate in the development and implementation of EH&S policies and programs. Lead and conduct safety assessments and provide EH&S subject matter guidance to BU Leaders, supervisors, first-aiders, and other functional teams.

Develop and deliver EH&S training programs to all levels of management and employees, plant wide.

Participate/provide EH&S leadership on multifunctional teams to provide subject matter support and guidance. Work with numerous and varied internal customers. Successfully interact with officials, local professionals, and regulatory agencies to support Hershey One Team values that deliver success.

Responsibilities:

Compliance:

  • Provide leadership for development and implementation of specific safety policies and programs. Maintain technical proficiency and serve as plant resource for EH&S program areas that deliver technical understanding to non-technical audiences. Develop and deliver effective safety training programs to any level in the organization. Provide technical guidance on complex safety issues to BU Leaders, supervisors, and other functional teams to attain compliance.

Auditing:

  • Perform or coordinate compliance inspections of safety procedures, equipment, and programs to ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements and risk reduction management. Report on findings and work with plant management to develop action plans to address deficiencies. Support plant management and other safety staff to ensure action plans are implemented and the necessary follow up occurs. Review new equipment installation designs and plans for compliance to established standards such as OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, etc.

Incident Management:

  • Independently execute investigation and analysis of incidents to identify root cause, and to verify satisfactory completion of corrective actions. Initiate appropriate corrective and preventative action plans, communicate findings, and follow-up to verify effective results of corrective actions. Collaborates and assists BU Leaders and supervisors to determine resolution and implement corrective actions that meet the needs of the BU and prevent incident reoccurrence. Uses various computer support systems (ex. SAP EH&S, SharePoint, MS Excel) to document data.

Safety Management System & Continuous Improvement:

  • Assists with the development, implementation and monitoring of Safety Management System aspects and written program documentation. Conducts regular written program reviews, prepares, and owns updates. Performs regular internal audits and documents, reports findings and follows-up on non-conformances. Participate/lead verification and validation activities that demonstrate an effective safety management system at the facility.

Project / Business Unit Support:

  • Drive continuous improvement through utilization of Safety program elements such as Near Miss Program, Corrective Action initiatives, work orders, QDR, Pre-start up reviews for engineering projects, and other risk reduction programs. Champions First Aid team and prepares documents as necessary. Leads and/or participates on multifunctional improvement teams to provide safety guidance and safety problem solving. Interacts with project managers to ensure safety issues are identified early in the project design and development process and are evaluated and addressed.

Training:

  • Create and implement training programs and informational materials as required to convey safety policies and procedures for new hire orientation, on-going regulatory requirements, and specialized training. Various learning management styles and learning verification techniques with the focus of assuring employee duplication of training material understanding.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Detailed working knowledge of federal, state, and local occupational safety industry regulations and guidelines (OSHA, EPA, L&I, other)
  • Strong document management skills and attention to details
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving/trouble shooting skills
  • Strong observation and auditing skills
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to influence and sustain EH&S change in facility culture. Unafraid to create successful and sustainable employee working relationships.
  • Proficiency in computer programs / software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, Power Point, SAP EH&S and SAP PM
  • Must have the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete multiple priorities with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to self-lead and independently complete work tasks with effective results
  • Must be able to work well in a team environment but also can function independently
  • Must have strong employee training development and presentation skills
  • Flexibility is key in this role as priorities change quickly. Must be able to move between tasks and projects on short notice and quickly change priorities based on customer and department needs, while meeting project deadlines
  • Ability to function under various functional demands such as work flexible hours, climb ladders to work platforms, climb stairs to other work areas, lifting of moderately heavy items such as test equipment or materials

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational/Industrial Safety, Safety Engineering, Human Factors, or other EH&S related field preferred. Equivalent related work experience that demonstrates professional EH&S skill set will be considered.
  • Ability to qualify and attain Associate Safety Professional (ASP) within 2 years through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Experience:

  • Preference for 3 to 5 years' experience in a heavy manufacturing environment related to EHS program management.
  • Preference for food, food-related or consumer package goods experience.
  • Experience in Safety Management System (VPP, OHSAS 18001, ANSI Z10) is a plus
