GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Team Leader Sterile Processing and Materials, the Sterile Processing Technician is assigned to the Sterile Processing areas within the Ambulatory Surgery Department. The tech is cross-trained to all areas of the department- receiving, decontamination, and re-sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives soiled, used and /or contaminated equipment, surgical instruments and supplies from the Operating Rooms, GI
Endoscopy Rooms, and satellite areas.

Disassembles and inspects the equipment and instruments for damage and overall cleanliness, setting aside rejects and prepares for cleaning and processing.
Performs duties which includes receiving, disassembling, inspecting, cleaning, sterilizing and assembling of materials processed in the department, wrapping kits, loading/unloading of Sterilizer baskets, operation of sterilizers, picking of instrument sets for surgical cases.

Maintains logs of reprocessed instruments and equipment following standards for documentation.

Cleans used articles, which have been returned from patient areas by washing and drying them in accordance with established SPD procedures.

Checks and assists with maintaining sterile supply inventory for the OR and inventory for the SPD. Assists Materials Department with maintaining par levels of supplies and reordering.

Prints Preference Cards and picks supplies and instrumentation for case carts according to OR schedule for the day.

Is available to bring equipment/ instrumentation to the OR when requested by circulating nurse/ MD.

Mixes special detergent solution according to standard procedures for hand washing, ultrasonic/mechanical sanitizing and lubricating instruments

Contacts appropriate person if major repair work is needed on equipment within the department. Equipment includes steam sterilizers, washer / decontaminator, ultrasonic washer and dryers and endoscopic scope washer/ decontaminator.

Performs and documents all required department quality assurance indicators, including biological testing on all decontamination/ sterilization equipment..

Operates and maintains steam sterilizes and other mechanical equipment; monitors daily.

Ambulatory Surgical Center Responsibilities

Contributes to the team philosophy of high quality performance and efficiency standards.

Works collaboratively with Surgeons and the Medical Director to accommodate their needs and priorities in caring for the ambulatory surgical patient.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Frequently works around mechanical equipment under noisy, humid conditions.

Frequently handles contaminated equipment with sharp cutting edges and broken glass.

Exposed to potential burns from hot steam lines, carts and packs. Exposed to potentially toxic chemicals. Adherence to safety precautions minimizes the risk of injury of over-exposure.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1-2 years experience in a Sterile Processing Department required. Certified SPDTechnician preferred.
Must be able to speak, read, write and understand medical terminology in order tofollow written instructions and complete various forms and records regardingequipment's processing and preparation of equipment's.
Must be able to regularly lift up to 30 lbs., stoop, bend, pull, and place andretrieve material.
