Position OverviewDriving university vehicles for the Geology 560-561 during summer field camp.

Work locations include: Kansas and Colorado.

Must be available to work on the following dates: May 17 to June 30, 2024.

Due to the nature of the position, drivers will log their drive time on a paper form inside the vehicles. These forms will be turned into Manuel Carmona upon return so the drivers can be paid accurately for the drive time.Job Description60%:

  • Drive vehicles to field camp.
  • Drive University vehicles to and from the field, to and from meals, on official field trips, and to and from Cañon City for laundry, weekend meals, and supplies as assigned by the Director.
  • Show courtesy to other drivers.
  • Do not eat or use headphones while driving.
  • Do not drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or other substances that alter your capacity to react.

10%:
  • Ensure that all passengers are wearing seat belts whenever the vehicle is moving.
  • Maintain order and decorum in the vehicle.
15%:
  • Help load vehicles and gas them before camp.
  • Check water level, oil level, tire air pressure, drive belts, and battery fluid weekly or, if necessary, more often.
  • Be available to assist with repairs if necessary. In general, drivers are not expected to be mechanics. Except in emergencies [e.g., a vehicle stranded in the field], professionals in Cañon City have done our repair work.
  • Report all vehicle problems as soon as possible after they develop.
  • Drive vehicles to town for servicing as directed.
10%:
  • Have vehicle interiors cleaned at departure time each morning.
  • Wash vehicles as directed.
  • Fill water jugs each working day.
5%:
  • Report potential problems to staff immediately.
  • Perform other vehicle-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  1. Enrolled as a student in Geology 560-561.
  2. Have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  3. Able to drive safely under a variety of circumstances. (i.e. at night, in traffic, in mountains), and for extended periods of time.
  4. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly).
