ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING FACULTY POSITION

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Delaware (UD) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in environmental engineering, beginning in the fall of 2024. This position is expected to be filled at the Assistant Professor level. An earned doctoral degree in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related field is required.

The department is building capacity in a number of strategic areas, including climate change, coastal processes, and data science. The ideal candidate will be able to contribute to one of these strategic areas. In addition, strong candidates should have expertise in foundational and transformative areas of environmental engineering and can conduct research at the intersection of environmental chemistry and human health. Potential areas of research interest may include, but are not limited to, bio- or geo-chemistry, innovative water treatment technology, resource recovery, wastewater surveillance, contaminant fate and transport, and environmental process modeling.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to 1) establish a productive, externally funded research program in environmental engineering and science, 2) train and mentor post-doctoral scholars and graduate and undergraduate students in research and professional development, 3) teach graduate and undergraduate core courses in environmental engineering, 4) work on interdisciplinary teams to tackle complex problems facing society, and 5) participate in service activities to the field.

About UD: The University of Delaware provides an excellent research base for interdisciplinary work. Within the Department, research programs exist in environmental, coastal, water resources, structural, transportation, civil infrastructure, railway, and construction engineering, with a strong focus on sustainability in the natural and built environments. The Delaware Environmental Institute, the Delaware Energy Institute, the Data Science Institute, the Mangone Climate Change Science and Policy Hub, the Disaster Research Center, and the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy are catalysts for interdisciplinary research in the areas of environment, energy, data science, and infrastructure. The state-of-the-art 194,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory provides a focal point for research and teaching on campus. The Delaware Biotechnology Institute is a magnet for multidisciplinary life science research, housing cutting-edge core facilities for sequencing, bioinformatics, bioimaging, and other shared equipment available to all users.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has 34 faculty members, approximately 400 undergraduate students, and 120 graduate students. The Department has state-of-the-art facilities and instruments for laboratory and field studies and computing.

Required Qualifications:

- An earned doctoral degree in civil or environmental engineering or a closely related field

- Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research with real-world impact

- Promise of or demonstrated success in securing funding

- Promise of or demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring

- Strong written and oral communication skills

- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the discipline, Department, and University

Preferred Qualifications:

- Post-doctoral experience

- Record of competitive external funding

- Experience with curriculum development and/or teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses

- History of interdisciplinary collaboration
