About the Department:

Student Academic Engagement and Success (SAES), an area within the Office of the Provost, works to ensure that SMU undergraduate students are aware of the academic opportunities and support systems that operate across campus to ensure their academic success and enrich their experiences inside and outside the classroom.

We partner with the Associate Provosts for Curricular Innovation and Policy and Faculty Affairs, Associate Provost for Institutional Planning and Effectiveness, and Directors of Assessment, the Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management, and Associate Deans to develop a comprehensive retention and graduation strategy for all undergraduate students.

About the Position:

The Undergraduate Degree Counselor works with declared majors, transfer students, and faculty advisors within Meadows School of the Arts and Lyle School of Engineering while collaborating closely with the Provost's Office and the Office of General Education. There are two positions one in Meadows and one in Lyle.

This collaboration advances retention efforts, implementation of the HighPoint four-year degree planner, conducting retention and enrollment data requests, analysis, and the obtainment of SMUin Four stated goals.

Through academic advisement (course selection, academic progress, four-year graduation), records processing, and strategic communications (website, social media, web resources, and job aids) the Undergraduate Degree Counselor builds community capacity and understanding related to General Education requirements at SMU.

Essential Functions:

  • Records Office Support & School-Specific Administrative Advising Support:Shared with the assigned school Student Academic Services Team, assist with athletic certification for declared majors, conduct graduation certification/audits for declared majors, update the SMU Meadows or Lyle Catalog, support probation, suspension, and dismissal processes, grade reporting, and late enrollment.
  • Undergraduate Degree Advising & Faculty:Serve as degree counselor and academic advisor for declared majors on General Education requirements. Meets with students to discuss academic progress, assists with selecting courses, assists with understanding General Education requirements, developing a clear path to graduation, and processing graduation audits. Advise Meadows or Lyle undergraduate majors
  • Liaison & Strategic Communications: Acts as the liaison between the assigned school and the Office of General Education. Work with central staff on proactive marketing/communication efforts to students related to General Education requirements. Communicate and outreach to Meadows or Lyle undergraduate students related to retention and graduation using queries and Tableau dashboards.
  • General Education Knowledge Building: Improve General Education completion rates through group workshops, student solutions, and partnering with various academic entities. Assist faculty with any General Education questions; Support faculty advisors related to their advising efforts as needed and collaborates with school records staff on projects.
  • Report and correct Degree Progress Report (DPR) issues pertaining to General Education curriculum to office and DES_AA team as they occur. Provide data/reporting to assigned school departments to ensure classes are offered as needed for students to graduate in a timely manner to support SMU in Four/retention efforts for declared majors
  • SMU in Four Initiatives: Partner with faculty advisors to find solutions to improve graduation rates within the school, implement and maintenance of four-year degree plans in the Highpoint degree planner, reducing faculty/staff time dedicated to advising. Develops marketing campaigns using social media and other outlets to communicate to students related to enrollment and retention efforts (e.g., early and midterm progress reports).
  • Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's is required.

A minimum of three years of work experience is required, preferably working in education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse population of students, parents, staff and faculty. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Must also demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.

Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Outlook. Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Experience with data visualization skills, PeopleSoft, and/or website content management software (e.g., Sitcore) is highly desired.
