Overview

The Underwriting Manager oversees activities within the underwriting department, provides management for a group of underwriters and/or underwriting assistants who are responsible for underwriting, review, and placement of risk with AmTrust. This requires extensive communication via telephone, face-to-face contact and written correspondence with a variety of individuals throughout the workday that can include company personnel, agencies or producers, policyholders, and insureds. Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times. Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.

Responsibilities

  1. Provides support and coaching to other underwriters and provides team leadership.
  2. Determines risk acceptability in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  3. Manages the selection and denial of new and/or renewal business including management of pricing targets, renewal retention targets and profitability targets.
  4. Monitors underwriting decisions through regular audits and address issues as appropriate individually or through group training.
  5. Develops, maintains, and collaborates with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business related needs.
  6. Focuses on producer relations including the management of their book of business by developing and implementing action plans as deemed appropriate.
  7. Manages and monitors all stages of underwriting execution.
  8. Creates and distributes management reports detailing various functions and status on a monthly basis.
  9. Travel as needed to perform agency visits or to attend company and industry meetings
  10. Keeps current with market trends and demands.
  11. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of experience successfully leading and supervising staff
  • Demonstrated effective management and leadership skills
  • Thorough knowledge of property/casualty underwriting procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others
  • Knowledge of non-profit insurance market.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting best practices and ability to apply same
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and interpretive skills
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to collaborate, "think outside the box" and make sound decisions to resolve complex matters
  • Ability to travel and work outside normal business hours


Preferred:
  • Insurance industry designations
  • Continuing education
