Job Summary:

This professional staff member reports to the Associate Bursar for Collections and is responsible for the collection of past due accounts from former students in accordance with Miami University's accepted procedures and policies, and the management of inquiries from students and families (written and verbal) concerning the validity of the debt. This position may be approved for remote work on a hybrid basis. Remote work is not a right, but a working arrangement that can be modified or revoked by Miami University at any time for any reason.

Duties/Physical Demands:

  1. Establish a relationship with students in order to collect payment in full or, when necessary, negotiate monthly payment agreements. 2. Document students' files concerning actions taken and expectations for payment, and follow up when necessary. 3. Provide proper paperwork for legal action; work with the Ohio Attorney General when necessary for court action. 4. Responsible for updates to accounts referred for collection: a. Answer telephone and written requests for documentation b. Work to find financial solutions for students and outstanding debt. 5. Work closely with the Office of Student Financial Assistance to ensure the application of aid to students' accounts and be proactive in developing policies to work cooperatively in addressing student and family financial challenges with the goal of finding satisfactory resolutions. 6. Work closely with other offices/departments to ensure that all resources for repayment have been utilized and the balance is represented correctly. 7. Manage the Perkins loan government reassignment process. 8. Manage the collection system to ensure that students' files are documented concerning actions taken and expectations for payment, and follow up when necessary. 9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree or 2 years of relevant work experience

Desired Qualifications:

Desired qualifications include experience with Higher Ed ERP system, ad hoc reporting, experience in a customer service environment, and Title IV Federal Financial Aid requirements. Previous experience in collections. Knowledge of the CFPB.

Applicants must have strong critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving, and strong negotiating skills; must be detail minded, organized; must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; must have the ability to handle numerous tasks, assign priorities, and handle confidential information; must have the ability to establish working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, university personnel, students, parents and outside collection agencies.
