Water Operator

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S):
The candidate must be mature, adaptable and the ability to work pleasantly and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students and staff; able to carry out all the essential duties and responsibilities of a Water Operator. The position will facilitate the daily operations and maintenance of the water treatment facility and will demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work process and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in the daily operations of the water treatment facility as directed by the Facilities Management.
  • Assists in operation of assigned treatment, mechanical and electrical equipment and other similarly related facility components and equipment related to the water system.
  • Perform Preventative tasks such as scheduled hydrant flushing, backflow testing and gate valve maintenance.
  • Assist in all bacteria/L&C Testing and all other testing requirements
  • Perform daily/monthly annual irrigation readings and reporting
  • Performs data entry and report generation, including data for preparing the Monthly Operating Report.
  • Monitors and controls assigned tasks to ensure cost-effective service to meet budget.
  • Coordinates to ensure that other facility employees follow established administrative, safety, and operating policies.
  • Perform maintenance duties in relation to Water System.
  • Assign, coordinate, and inspect work as needed.
  • Review possible projects, order supplies, plan work, communicate with trade personnel and customers.
  • Plan and program sequence of tasks for completion by Department.
  • Requires first response for various issues including stabilize and remedy the situation as needed.
  • Respond to and assess emergency calls at the request of Campus Police or the duty manager. Stabilize if possible and make a work order for a follow up repair.
  • May need to respond to emergency call-in situations after hours and on weekend.
  • Inputs data into the computerized work order system, recording time and work order information.
  • Maintain time and production records. Estimate, requisition and inspect materials.
  • Technical decisions related to operational adjustments may be required.
  • May be required to assist other trades as directed.
SKILLS:
  • Strong computer skills, knowledge of MS Office including email and electronic calendars, work order system software concentrating, competent problem-solving and project management skills. Ability to organize and prioritize work, takes initiative, resolve problems, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience working with water related computer programs such as SCADA and others.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with all levels in a demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to act decisively and independently to resolve complex issues.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must have High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Courses in water and/or wastewater operation a plus.
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Hold a Massachusetts certified Operator of Drinking Water Facilities-Grade T-2 treatment & D-2 distribution certification.
  • Must hold or be willing to get a backflow certification within 1 year.
  • Must be willing to be listed as operator of water system with the DEP and do all associated reports required for running the water system.
  • Proficiency with computers, including an ability to work with: SCADA, Microsoft Word, Excel, and other site-specific systems.
  • Required to be available for after-hours calls, work an irregular work schedule and overtime hours.
  • Valid driver's license is a condition of initial & continued employment. Operate assigned equipment and vehicle.
  • Experience in a college environment is preferred.
  • Ability to speak English. Understand and follow written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely and be able to relay instructions and directions to others.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Able to withstand long period of walking, standing, twisting and lifting.
  • The duties and responsibilities are generally performed involve; frequent standing; frequent walking; light to moderate lifting; light carrying; frequent bending and reaching; keyboarding and telephone operation.
  • Performs and reviews work at interior and exterior locations that involve hazardous environments requiring protective equipment that conforms to OSHA regulations and some physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, odors, chemicals and noise.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces, on ladders and rooftops, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Specific physical conditions require frequent work with chemicals.
  • The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • May stand, walk, or move 6 to 8 hours daily. May sit for 1 to 3 hours daily.
  • May perform operations and maintenance functions requiring manual dexterity and precision movements, continuous or repetitive arm and hand movements, grasping movements, and occasional forceful exertion.
  • Exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, bending and reaching, climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth and visual cues or signals.
  • May occasionally be required to wear hearing protection or a respirator.
  • Moderate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials and chemicals, machinery, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, and water hazards.

Days/Work Hours: Monday to Friday - 7:00am to 3:30pm including 30 minutes unpaid lunch
Days off: Saturday & Sunday
Pay rate: $43.16 per hour (Plus $1.10 hourly stipend for Plumber Journeymen/Master license)
