Worker's Compensation Manager
Store Support Center

(Hybrid-Remote)

We are searching for an experienced Worker's Compensation Manager for our Store Support Center, located at 600 Citadel Drive, Commerce, CA 90040.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Workers' Compensation Manager supports the workers' compensation claims processes for Smart & Final and oversees the day-to-day work of the third-party claims administrator (TPA) and insurance carrier adjusters that directly handle the claims.  Directs the interactive process for associates who have workers' compensation claims as well as any other vendors that support the workers' compensation claims process.   Works directly with National Claim Director offering input on workers' compensation claim settlement negotiations.   Provides ergonomic assessment and product recommendation for employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

Workers' Compensation

  • Receive all reported workers' compensation claims and ensure that the claims have been reported to the carrier or TPA
  • Set up workers' compensation claim files in the dedicated Risk Management server drive
  • Scan and catalog all relevant claim data
  • Maintain in-house electronic workers compensation database and medical panel information for Risk Management and Human Resources departments.
  • Create and maintain all internal claim reporting documents on company portal. 
  • Assist Manager of Treasury and Risk with workers' compensation.
  • Serve as principal communication liaison and primary advocate for injured associates with Vendors, store managers, district managers, Safety Manager, Distribution, Transportation, Human Resources, and Legal. 
  • Facilitate and manage the workers' compensation claims process. 
  • Build internal and external relationships to proactively identify and address claim issues. 
  • Conduct all formal interactive accommodation meetings for injured workers with permanent work restrictions. 
  • Coordinate key medical clinics that are associated with the Smart & Final medical provider network and other medical providers to promote and ensure quality treatment and timely reporting.
  • Coordinate/monitor the return-to-work program and use influence to encourage adherence to Smart & Final's return-to-work program
  • Facilitate and manage store modified duty labor credit program.
  • Work with appropriate TPA claims administrators and medical providers to assist in managing and resolving claims. 
  • Monitor each workers' compensation claim to ensure it is moving towards a timely and cost-effective resolution and raise issues to the National Claim Director, as needed
  • Utilize TPA risk management information system (Via One) to produce weekly, quarterly and ad hoc reports for the Risk Management, Safety, Operations, Distribution Center and Accounting departments
  • Research/execute required reporting to CAL/OSHA and other federal, state and local agencies.  Maintain and distribute the annual CAL/OSHA logs for the Company
  • Maintain compliance for workers' compensation posting notices company wide
  • Present key issues, such as significant changes in claim strategy, potential exposures and loss trends to CFO, Finance and Group Vice President & Treasurer, National Claim Director for evaluation
  • Reviews existing panel counsel, service vendors and medical providers and sources new claims attorneys, service vendors and medical providers to ensure that the company is handling their claims in the most efficient and effective manner
  • To extent granted by VP, Group Vice President, judiciously use authority to proactively settle claims in conjunction with TPA and defense counsel

Risk Management Department

  • Provide coverage and serve as back up to the General Liability Claims Coordinator in her absence.
  • Demonstrate leadership by creating an environment that fosters teamwork, values diversity, and which supports and respects all team and company staff-members, internal and external customers, and vendors.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
AA/AS degree or equivalent combination of education andexperience.  Must have earned the WorkersCompensation Claims Administrator (WCCA) certification and be working towardsor have earned the Workers Compensation Claims Professional (WCCP)certification.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills arerequired for this position as is the ability to read and comprehend directedinstructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Associate must also be proficient in technical Workers Compensationterminology, be able to write internal and external correspondence, andeffectively present information in one-on one and small group situations to theassociates, the TPA, doctors, nurses and medical facility personnel, as wellas, insurance companies. 
  • Mustbe able to communicate effectively to all levels within the organization anduse their communication skills both within and outside the organization toinfluence the outcome of worker's compensation claims.
  • Personalcomputer skills including the Microsoft Office programs; Excel, and Word and theability to apply these skills to essential duties and responsibilities isrequired. 
  • Experience with RiskManagement Information Systems (RMIS), particularly ViaOne, the workers'compensation TPA's system is essential. 
  • Must have the ability to navigate within various claims managementsystems used by the company to track claims and run data.
